I could get behind a 300 f5.6. Something small like the Zukio line of glass for the OG-OM space (200/5). With mirrorless bodies, EVFs, and AF something small toss it in your bag and forget it

Nikon S2 and a 50/1.4. Stay with Nikon so your aperture ring and you’re focusing ring on the lenses between your F3 and your rangefinder all go the same direction. Take it from someone who switched from Leica to Nikon for that very reason. Though my SLR of choice was an F2 plain prism

While I don’t like 23&Me you might look into genetic services, comparing the two of you and then perhaps find his family from what you have. You know the geography (where he was, perhaps where he lived), you know the time frame, perhaps you remember general description info.

There may be a volunteer organization some where that can help. This is the kind of research that some people might have a hobby.

Not much but it’s a start that you can turn into a bonding exercise for the two of you.

Dishwashers and bus boys usually don’t need to speak the language that well. Perhaps as many as 15 phrases should get you by.

Working in the back of a restaurant is a pretty good way to learn a language also. Odds are the people will trade you they’ll teach you, Polish, you’ll teach them American English.

Start sending to Polish popular music. Hearing people speak a language and listening to music sometimes the best ways to get used to the sounds. One approach is listen to a phrase and repeated out loud to yourself.

I moved over to Israel, but a little over a year ago and now trying to learn Hebrew, wish I had learned these things earlier.
