Because without a conference championship, conferences would need to incentivize their teams to have better strengths of non-conference schedules in order to “win” more spots for the conference in the playoff. No auto-spot for the top conference championship winners means you’ve gotta compare other metrics.

Also, don’t pretend it’s because of your religion. Durham has many, many successful Christian-owned businesses. We have dozens of Christian churches. It’s because of his specific public positions (worth reiterating: that he posted) that are threatening to many of this city’s residents. We’re happy to welcome Christians that want to emulate Christ.

There’s some risk in this because being anywhere of the proximity of some of the excellent places (for both food and drink and otherwise) around there might make Durham too interesting for this person. Potential risk: proximity to cool stuff.
