It’s not the government’s job to keep people from being dumb and throwing away their lives. That sort of thing - I shouldn’t be dumb, I shouldn’t throw away my life - has to come from within. That’s the whole point. Because the government is so empowered to come in and clean up the mess...that’s how the situation got so out of hand.

My great uncle, recently deceased, was probably one of the longest living American survivors of the Japanese POW camps. He was a SGT in the USAAC, won a Silver Star at Clark Field, was surrendered by Dugout Doug (spit on the floor), and survived Bataan, O’Donnell, Cabanatuan, slave labor in the coal mines on the home islands, and legend has it, was in the hold of a troop ship (slave labor being shuttled around from mine to mine) in Nagasaki harbor when they dropped the second A bomb.
Thanks to the humanitarianism of the Japanese, and the complete Heisman they gave to the rules of “civilized” warfare, his parents - my grandparents - did not know if he was alive or dead until he came up the walk home. By then his father was dead.
In any event, judging from a fictionalized account of his ordeal he wrote after coming home, and the stories he told his brothers, the stories you hear about the Japanese POW camps are probably more -tame- than they were in actuality. The militaristic Japanese during WWII were next level heinous, on par with the Nazis, in some ways perhaps even worse. They should consider themselves fortunate we only dropped two eggs on them.

Well then never eat another pizza, drink another lager, or listen to any more Irish music, just to name a few things, and you’ll never have to worry about appropriating that universal honky culture. No more Cabernet or Monty Python films, either. Sheesh.

Well then I stand corrected, and this is a good development. Thanks for the info!

Unfortunately, I’m fairly sure that’s not the case. During a traffic stop, all a cop needs to search the vehicle is a reasonable suspicion to do so. Chief among the criteria to determine “reasonable suspicion” is that it must be clearly articulable.
“I could smell a metric ton of weed in the car” is clearly articulable. If I were the defense attorney here, I wouldn’t want to base my defense on unreasonable search.
‘Tis what it ‘tis...
Long story short, this guy was a nudnik and earned his pinch.

My experience with my 9-month old pup confirms this. I had no intention of hunting him (haven’t been hunting in years, no plans to resume), but he points (squirrels, rabbits) so naturally I might have to rethink things. You’re right - it’s truly amazing what these dogs can do w/o human intervention.

I’m biased, of course, but I think this would make for an excellent Fender advertising campaign ;-)

That’s delightful, but a cure for baldness would be better.

Because the “skirmish” was part of the US’s black ops program during the early stages of the conflict. Essentially the USN trolled NVN on the coast to draw them into a conflict, which would give the LBJ administration the rationale they’d need to escalate. If LBJ told the truth, the program risked exposure, and LBJ would have been busted.
Suggest “Dereliction of Duty” by HR McMaster for a thorough accounting of the dynamics in play...power struggle between DoD and JCS, risks to LBJ’s election, his (planned) domestic agenda, etc.
