For context (my take), Australian politics is more left than the US, with our conservatives being politically between dem/GOP, and our progressives being more left than dems. The illegal immigration became a political football for decades, and the detention centers seem to be the system with the quietest opposition, and have continued through progressive government in power. To be clear most are not proud of the situation but other issues shine brighter - eg cost of property/rentals
