Opinion needed - go with 45beta (Gnome) or 44 and full upgrade later with new release. (self.Fedora) [Discussion]

Wanted to see what's new. It's not my work laptop, so if anything goes wrong, 2h reinstall and I'm online again.

Oh, I actually went through with full Win wipe and went with 45 Beta - checked all the blockers, none really affects my setup and so far I'm really happy with it - no more "help windows hello" or stupid copilot key accidents, or wanting to listen to an audiobook just to realize it's not really on your desktop, but on OneDrive - got really really tired of all that... then ther's whole update madness "finalizing, wait just a momen, setting things up, almost ready, etc... :)

Thank you, will try, but, my battery is already at 87% max capacity - that might be the reason - thin chassis heating up while gaming usually cause this.
Zars
Same, checked blocker list - none of them affects my setup, so far excellent performance and power efficiency - getting crazy low power draws when just browsing on my laptop.

I went with workstation beta, so far so good. If something goes wrong, it's max 2-3h getting everything back up and running with all my data.

Asus ZenBook S, Intel core ultra 7 258V, integrated graphics, 3k OLED screen.
It lasts good 10h+ if all you do is browse Reddit, pay the bills and read stuff online. 😂

Pendrive will die pretty quickly. You can get 128Gb pendrive-style SSD - that would be much faster and long term.

I second this opinion, Ubuntu is excellent for beginners - there are different spins with different desktop environments - live boot few of them to see which one speaks to you - everything will be pre-configured and pre-installed, but, you can always customize stuff into oblivion later if you wish to do so.
With Fedora you would have to learn how to customize the desktop, how to run updates and so on - it's a bit steeper learning curve for beginner.
Having said that, I have Ubuntu on my older laptop and Fedora on my main - happy using both. You're not missing out on anything, unless you have cutting edge hardware that needs latest stable kernel for it to just work - if everything (wifi, bt, buttons, mic, speakers, etc) work fine on Ubuntu - go for it. It's a very decent OS.

That was also my question - why not go with Fedora workstation - Gnome, Wayland already pre-configured. Add Simple Taskbar Gnome extension, Desktop Icons NG and you're golden.

About 8 years ago, Windows update bricked my computers. Had to find alternative.

Partially agree, I distro hop to find the distro that works on my hardware and has DE I can use - I'm not looking for the perfect setup, stock Gnome is fine with me, so is KDE or Cinnamon or Xfce - just recently tried latest Mint, Ubuntu and Fedora - decided on Fedora, because everything just worked on my particular laptop.
I get where you're going with this - yes, there are people who like the process of installing new distro and then there are those who need it just to do it's job.

Similar experience here, system runs much cooler and power draw is noticeably smaller on Fedora compared to Windows - I just switched, so I'm actually noticing this.

Same here, it's not my business machine, just a personal laptop for web and few indie games, I can tinker with it if needs be and that's what I've been doing for the last few days - sure, some Gnome extensions are broken on 51.1, but, I'm using like 3 of them and can easily live without it.
I was just totally fed up with Windows - every frikin time it does something I really don't want it to do.
Zars
Thanks, went through the blockers - none of them thankfully relates to me.
Zars
Thank you, yeah, mine also reads 45 workstation instead of pre release. Weird.
Zars
Well, clean install will be about 2h actually - just move my files from SSD backup, not a big deal since I barely customize Gnome.

Installed Beta. Surprisingly, the CPU frequency drop was actually sudo powertop - I kept it running in console and it kept dropping CPU frequencies to 400Mhz. Filed a bug report - took me day to figure it out lol.

It's very calorie efficient way to boost your protein intake. I boost about 33g of protein I'm typically missing from the meals. It's just that - fast, efficient, does not require cooking, does not replace proper meal. Bit of satiety.

I stand corrected, just tried Rimworld at 166% scaling at yes, it is completely off :|
Zars
I think the scaling might have been fixed - I'm running 200% upscaling on 3k panel, in games, I cannot set resolution higher than native panel supports. I'm however, on laptop on live beta stick - running in ram only 2 indie games.

Probably with some keto bread or something that tastes as awful - not gonna hit that craving. I'd go for the real deal and cut back on mayo if possible.

Local in Latvia, doubt it's available on your end.
No, because I do not know what that is 😂
