Will be interesting to see how things change going forward. From the outside I don’t think SS has been great for them, but Meghan and Harry strike me as the sorts who would do better having outside advice rather than doing their own thing.

Another excerpt from Courtiers here
On Charles:
Even when he is not orchid-spotting, Charles is a demanding boss. Working for him is not a nine-to-five job. This, according to one former member of his household, is because he is very demanding of himself. “He is never satisfied with himself, or what he has achieved. People around him had to work hard to keep up. He had enormous stamina.” Another said: “He was demanding in that he is always working. Seven days a week. Never stops. At any moment he may want to call you about something. Working on his boxes, on his ideas, on his papers. The pace is pretty intense.” The phone calls could come at any time, from after breakfast until 11 at night, even at Christmas. In contrast to the conviviality of his grandmother’s household, Charles’s office is suffused with a ferocious work ethic: he is a man with a mission.
“He would drive people hard. He was full of ideas, always asking people to go and do things. The workload as private secretary would be immense. He had strong opinions. He also had a proper temper on him, which was quite fun. He would rarely direct it at the individual. It would be about something, and he would lose his temper. He would throw something. He would go from zero to 60 in a flash, and then back down again. Things would frustrate him, especially the media.”
Sounds like we should expect a bullying investigation into Charles soon! Working all hours and calling staff outside of working hours, on public holidays, yelling at staff, horrible temper. Even throwing things? That’s not an appropriate working environment. He sounds like a right wanker.
Interested to see whether in the full book Low directly compares the staff treatment by married-ins vs. blood royals. The reported behaviour by Meghan sounds terrible, but the above from Charles sounds the same if not worse (throwing things), and there has been a lot more coverage of Meghan. Plus the reports of Andrew’s treatment of staff (the stuffed toys), and William’s staff having to walk on eggshells due to his temper, and Michael Fawcett being a massive racist to those under him.

Right?? QE2 got a pass for some absolutely horrific stuff.
During COVID I loved how Princess Sofia of Sweden became a hospital volunteer. It’s less glamorous than armed forces but still so needed, and nice to see royals actually doing a humble job.
_Pikachu_
Man, wouldn’t it be nice if the press actually dwelled on that stuff rather than the endlessly petty who invited who on a walkabout?

I think one of the reasons very few of the BRF do interviews like that is because all of them are out of touch assholes and would come across as such, with Harry being no exception.
I too would love to see the BRF reflect on their illegal and immoral actions, whether it’s wars or concentration camps or slavery or likening war to video games or being the commander in chief of the armed forces that fought in said illegal and immoral wars.
As for Harry specifically, I’m interested in his memoir. If it’s a reflection on how he’s grown with the necessary criticism of his past actions, it’ll be an interesting read. If it’s whining about how he’s hard done by, well, out of touch asshole like the rest of the family. Time will tell.

Exactly. If she knew, Meghan probably didn’t think it was particularly notable compared to all the other blood jewels the RF wear frequently. The outrage about it was amplified 1000x because it’s Meghan.
_Pikachu_
Haha Charles must be sweating bullets about this. Or maybe it’ll convince people it wasn’t just one sided?
Also, conspiracy mode: setting my watch for a fabricated MM scandal in November to distract

The earrings thing is so weird. What is the royal approved time period where association with MBS is forbidden? Because Meghan shouldn’t have worn the earrings (that were gifted to QE2 not her) but then it’s fine that MBS was invited to QE2’s funeral? If the RF don’t want to be associated with him because he murdered a journalist then they should commit to it, not decide it’s fine just because 4 years have passed.
_Pikachu_
Agreed. This makes Meghan look bad (and I’m glad someone is finally saying what the bullying actually was, rather than just “I was shaking when she came near me”).
In saying that, this quote
Part of the problem, according to one source, was that everyone in the Palace was too genteel and civil
is uhh… an interesting comparison in the context of the first mixed race RF member.

I thought Charles could change it by himself with new letters patent? Like he can’t take away Harry’s dukedom I think, but he could with the princedom.

So protective of diversity that they’re still exempt from discrimination laws with no plans to change it. Inclusive champions 😍

How gauche of her to have earned her own money! Doesn’t she know the classy way to be rich is to be born into riches from centuries of exploitation of empire?
_Pikachu_
Agreed. More than 50% of people watching it across the entire world? Once you exclude kids and people sleeping that’s like 75% of the population and that’s just not happening. I don’t know anyone who watched it and if that many people watched it I shouldn’t be able to breathe without bumping into someone who did.

For me it’s more about striking a balance: still new clothes, so no ability for the media to make a thing about how they somehow dishonoured the queen by wearing a dress twice, but not “new-new”, as it’s a piece we’ve seen before. So honouring the queen without drawing the spotlight.

For me I feel sympathy because honestly it feels like the rest of his family are using this time to really put the boot in. E.g. the delay in telling him, the plane debacle, the invite/uninvite issues - it’s all just coming across as the family having opportunities to either be kind or be cold and they keep choosing cold. Now I know people will have their own opinions on whether it’s merited or not, and that’s fine - but for me, I feel like they should be choosing kind a bit more at a family funeral.
