Right! Places like Almaty are super shiny and developed and cleaner than British cities. I'm not saying there's no poverty but obviously it's nothing like that stupid movie. It's definitely prevented people from going there as tourists because they assume it's a shithole, for example.

And the people in the film don't even look vaguely Kazakh. If they're meant to be ethnically Russian then that's even more ignorant.

I went to a counter-rally last night and 1000s of people showed up to show solidarity with their community and tell the racists to f*ck off. Hugely mixed and diverse crowd. Teens in track suits, old people, people in wheelchairs, black and brown people, middle class white people some of whom have probably never been to a protest/rally before I expect. The atmosphere was so positive and friendly.

The fascists never showed up in the end, as far as anyone could tell. Presumably they saw the crowd and bottled it.

But lots of places make the biodiversity itself the attraction for tourists, which then helps to preserve it (eg national parks in places like Kenya or the Philippines are quite successful at this I think?)
