I will pay with money, never my time.

I agree completely, and take it a step further - If I can't fully own it (i.e., watch it on whatever device I want, whenever I want, with or without internet), I go sailing. HBO/Discovery's last episode of deleting a show from people's library that they purchased is just a no-go for me. Heck, even physical is getting difficult, with either no physical release or tied to BR players that need internet connections.

As soon as there's a GoG or Downpour for movies and TV shows, I'll be happy. Until then, I break out my fancy hat.

Had that happen with comcast years ago. "I'm holding one part of the cable in my left hand, and one part in my right hand, and there is nothing going between my hands! I don't think restarting my cable box for the fourth time will help anything."

Still took ~30 minutes of "troubleshooting" and warnings about having to pay for the callout if it turns out to be my equipment before he scheduled a tech.

I can't agree enough - I remember when this sub was all about how to break out of the "live TV" cycle, all about dropping your monthly costs (internet included), all about getting rid of commercials, and how to learn to love being able to only watch what you want to watch. Slowly it morphed into just a place to praise/bitch about these online streaming services which are just cable by another method. This place has definitely changed, and instead of having many people who want to break out of the cable system, now it's mostly made of people that want cable, just not the way they had it - they want to have their cake and eat it too. I basically quit posting and commenting here after being downvoted so many times for saying that YoutubeTV, PS Vue, etc. are just cable by another name and method and that the prices will start to rise eventually.

Have any tips on how to kill a cactus? My wife and I have been trying to kill this thing for years. It’s one with flat pads and small-ish spikes, not sure the type, but this thing has survived repeated glyphosate (both mixed down and concentrate), I think some old mustang, bleach, gasoline, and just about whatever else I could think to pour on it. It’s in a rock patch where I don’t want anything growing, so scorched-earth isn’t a concern. If anything, we seem to have sterilized the ground where it originally was, but it just keeps coming up through some weed matting further away - now it looks like a ring of cacti about 4’ in diameter. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

Similar thing happened when I was about 17. My family owns and runs a farm, and one of our salesmen had been needing a new truck. We had been putting off buying it as there was no real rush, but one day our farm truck finally gave up the ghost, so off to the dealership I and a friend of mine (also 17) went. We got to the dealership after having been out in the fields pretty much the entire morning, so we were a little dirty and sweaty to say the least. Not one person would give us the time of day, and finally when we did ask someone, they basically turned their nose up at us, proceeded to pretend we didn't exist, then went to help another customer. As we were about to leave, what I later found out to be the newest salesman came up and asked if we needed help. I told him we needed to buy one base truck and the same model fully loaded, no test drives needed as we had done that a few weeks prior, and it would be cash for both. He felt like he'd hit the jackpot.

Well, as soon as we sat down with him to start negotiating/paying for the vehicles, the first person we'd talked to dropped buy and tried to pull seniority, talking about how he knew more about what he was doing and he could get it done faster, etc. I told him to shove it and go help someone that just walked in, like he had earlier. He was not terribly happy losing out on ~$80,000 of a cash sale. After calling the bank to confirm, we left with both vehicles about 20 minutes later.

The thing I don't understand is this is a rural community, and if a farmer shows up to buy a truck (or two) it either means they want one now and can afford it, or they need one now. Why you wouldn't help the person who is most likely to leave with a vehicle boggles my mind.

Also of note, if you want just a simple rip already transcoded to reduce size, Handbrake will do everything in one go, right off the disc.

He actually yelled at a customer for saying "Verizon" at one point. This was also the man that, while doing inventory, would just drop MacBooks from chest height to the floor after getting their serial number. He was just not quite cut out for technology.

Yeah, that can go both ways (woo generalizations!). My family owns a small company, and several years back we hired a woman who was about six months pregnant. Great bookkeeper, fantastic work ethic, and after three months has her baby and takes off for maternity leave. She took four months off and then called and quit. We paid her for seven months, only 3 of which she was actually working. But, I guess since we're "scum" we deserve it.

I've been getting really good Apple spoofs recently. I was pretty surprised when I saw the first one, as it had the right background, the right logo, perfect spelling (which is what initially threw me), and the address it was sent from was something like "[email protected]" instead of the usual "[email protected]". Still knew it was fake from the tone, but overall it was a really impressive effort.

Yeah but FUCK APPLE!!!!!!!111!!! /s

That's the whole reason these get upvoted to high heavens but when a new windows vuln is found it gets a much more muted response.

EDIT: Stay classy, netsec!

I got tired of seeing those cryptic lights and bought a bluetooth OBDII reader and Torque for my android. My favorite time so far has been when my check engine light came on flashing (usually very, very bad) and then turned off before I could pull over and shut off the car. The only code stored was "Cylinder 6 misfire". I have a 4 cylinder vehicle. Turns out Chevy re-used some error codes from their other vehicles on my car, with new and completely different meanings. Sometimes you need to ask the pros.

Me owning my media is the biggest issue I have right now. If I can't put in on my plex server, I don't want it. I don't want to be told what devices I'm allowed to watch my media on, despite my paying for it. I stripped DRM from my iTunes media when I made the switch and now I'll only buy DVDs and blu rays instead of digital so I can rip it to a format I can use.
