> English Adoption: The term entered Middle English as calkelatour and appeared by the late 14th century (notably in the writings of John Wyclif around 1380) to describe a person who performed mathematical calculations or worked as a bookkeeper
Electronic Calculators removed the job of human calculators.
Technologies have changed the workforce. Most notably far fewer people now work growing food.

You picked 4% as your level. Inflation has not breached that level now, and has only just hit 4%.
Oil prices are one factor driving inflation, and Australian policy won’t produce lower oil prices.
The way to address impact of macro policy on mortgage debt is cancellable fixed rate home loans.

What this article mostly does is destroy the credibility of the author.
Batteries are much cheaper than snowy hydro for overnight storage.
How can we keep the lights on overnight as coal exits? We can use wind (which is intermittent), gas (expensive and responsible for high emissions), or store energy for use overnight and on cloudy days.
But you don't need much gas.

High capital cost solutions for a low capacity factor problem are fundamentally wrong headed. The same reason nuclear is bad idea.
Gas can be low emissions, with renewable with methane from rubbish, and hydrogen. Due to limited availability and cost you don't want to use much of that.
Snowy hydro is an expensive pumped storage option, not just because of the tunnelling, but also because of the transmission costs. The tunnelling obviously makes it risky, as well as costly.
Even if we want pumped hydro there are other options. You could use Tasmanian hydro resources, and build more wind there as well which adds to diversification, reducing the intermittency of grid wind.
Snowy 2.0 is no longer a bargain. But it’s still a very good long-term investment.
What is the rate of return we are talking about here?
Do you want your super making that return?

We did get a light weight preview with Ukraine only a few years earlier.
I like support EVs, I don't love the particular mechanism, and would prefer a combined $5,000 flat rebate, and zero interest 7 year finance.
That would make an Atto 1 $40 a week, which makes the whole car competitive with just petrol cost for high distance users.

One idea is the it is the governments responsibility to consider future potential price directions and direct private purchases.
Another idea is that:
Shadow spokesperson for Climate Change and Energy, Ted O’Brien MP
We want to ensure Australian motorists can choose the vehicle that’s right for them – whether that’s electric, hybrid, petrol, diesel or hydrogen

The efficiency standard was recommended many years before it was implemented because the LNP was in power, and they are trying to destroy the planet to protect the short term profits of fossil fuel companies.

Our super funds complain they have too much money to invest to invest it domestically. If we want more investment we could just tax them more if invest offshore.
In the long run productivity and equality deliver living standards.
Productivity comes from productive investment.
One problem is that we have confused rent seeking, and investment.
Bidding up the prices of existing investments, companies, houses, is not new investment. A landlord outbidding an owner occupier is not increasing our capital stock. One super fund out bidding another one for existing Commonwealth bank shares is not increasing our capital stock.
Australia has plenty of domestic capital. We are actually a significant player on the world stage in retirement savings.
Our super funds have plenty of money to fund the replacement of our aging electricity generation. Yet much of the new capacity is foreign investment. It seems to be that we are too accommodating to offshore investors. Most of our export gas is foreign owned.
The highest level of savings has coincided with the lowest levels of business investment.
We need the tax system to penalise trading of existing assets relative to creating new ones.

You comment echo my first thoughts.
Who decides what good reform is?
Australia grew very strongly in the post war period off the back of strong unions, interventionist government, strong public enterprise, (public electricity generation, insurance, banks, etc.), high corporate tax rates, etc.
When we deregulated and privatised we destroyed the engines of post war growth.

I am thinking if you can run a internet cable across the ocean you can run some kind of detecting cable across the ocean.
Then you can see every ship (and submarine) and hit it with a missile.
You can also see them from space. They all leave from ports.

They are the party that has declined most in recent times.

If we want banks to keep roles in Australia then just make them do it.
Banks are regulated.
Just ban any Australian banks from having any roles offshore than can be done locally.
Remove their banking license for breaches.
This is not complicated.
Maybe we want higher bank profits, maybe we want more banking jobs in Australia.
The RBA want more unemployment to push down wages. Offshoring helps.

Once the training is done AI is cheap.
Chinese AI models would cost $10 rather than $200.
And $200 a month is not inconsistent with the current cost of supporting windows, office, etc.

Because land supply is not created by investment taxing land has minimal impact on the supply of land.
Because of this very high marginal rates of tax on rents from land are not highly distortionary.
Applying stamp duty and taxes on the built property value creates a disincentive to invest.

Victoria has done OK.

Mostly you factor in interest on the loan.
Land tax is incident on land values.
The reduced interest on land offsets the land tax with no change in rents.

100%. If we want to kick start "the housing market" cut the interest rate.
We may want to kick start building. We could do that just by building a bunch of public housing, which is overdue.
Only about 300,000 Australians are farmers, about 2.1% of the world’s population.
Human calculators probably lost their jobs and lived in poverty. Other people later became mathematicians.
There is no iron law that the market takes care of people, and plenty of examples where it doesn’t. Individuals, towns and whole regions can be mired in poverty for generations.
