It's in the Globe and Mail.
See also the Prime Minister of Canada. No one seriously believes he represents the interests of anyone close to where he came from.

They need to ensure anyone involved with Element AI is kept as far away as possible from this, and not receive any taxpayer support whatsoever. Commercial AI in Canada has become a near total grift, which is sad given the research history here. It's dubious that the gov should throw money at research labs given we are so bad at capturing the resulting wealth generated.
Rather than an AI strategy the government need an API strategy where we automate by having decent APIs around government services, such that the need for LLMs to interface between people goes down. It's far more boring, much more predictable, but will have much greater benefits without producing huge downsides.
Edit to add: The Element AI wikipedia page suspiciously fails to mention this: https://betakit.com/element-ai-announces-200-million-cad-series-b-round/
It was reported by The Globe and Mail, in August, that the Quebec government, through Investissement Québec as well as CDPQ, contributed a collective $100 million USD to the round. Quebec’s Economy and Innovation Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon told the Globe at the time that Investissement Québec put up $25 million USD, with CDPQ contributing up to $75 million USD, giving it the right to appoint a director to Element AI’s board.
The fact this stuff isn't on their page, or that the CDPQ finally realizing what a mess they were led to their sale, suggests there has been an ongoing campaign to rewrite history so they can replay it again.
Managing to spend $100M on AI in 2019, and having nothing to show for it five years later - impressive stuff.

Yep. Purely anecdotally the rate at which the kids of immigrants move to the US, especially after graduation, is stratospheric. The stuff they come out with when justifying this decision would get you instabanned on here.
What has happened in the last decade is Canada is no longer a destination for immigrants with options.

Yeah, and the way anti Carney stories get voted down to 0 in seconds.

Yeah, if you can imagine a parallel universe where the NDP had not gone identity politics mad they'd be in a far stronger position today.
I am not entirely persuaded the damage wasn't done way before Jagmeet became leader though.

He's controlling the CBC reporters with secret Neuralink implants receiving commands from Starlink.
Give it 20 years and that will be a thing.

So gun stuff backfired, and instead it's abortions and Trump.
Damn I should stop procrastinating.

They've had over 10 years of this, and have been going in circles, deliberately, so I don't think some level of doubt is undue cynicism.
Whenever the subject has been got into in depth on here it rapidly deteriorates into a situation where a lot of people demonstrate they will destroy the ecosystem entirely as long as they get their cut, but otherwise they'll pretend to be moralising eco warriors. (And "their cut" translates to all the profits of the enterprise).
There are enough people like this in reality that it will require a very high level of assertion on the part of the feds, even with the antics to the south.
I have been very clear that my position is you need a viable federal Crown Corp in place to even investigate building, owning and running it, but no such level of specificity has been forthcoming from any of the candidates.

When I've mentioned this here before it got quietly removed.
It is a welcome change that this subject is now open to discussion.

It's not going to be quite a brain drain, but Canada is going to have problem with a serious drop in tax revenue between this and reduced investment thanks to the capital gains changes.
I'm honestly not sure how the national debt here ever gets cleared without a massive devaluation of the CAD which will end up burning pensioners hard, and suspect desperation to avoid dealing with that is the true reason for many apparently irrational policies, which are leading to individuals taking decisions like moving away making the cycle accelerate.

I also have no family doctor and have come to the conclusion we should get a massive tax reduction. (I'd go so far as to make it punitive to the health authorities so they actively pay the unserved). This reached peak stupid when after a worthless ER visit they wanted to refer me to my family doctor for follow ups and were confused that had I had one I wouldn't be in ER in the first place.
The governments would inevitably argue that this would incentivize people to avoid getting a family doctor, but that's a situation they allowed to happen in the first place.

There is no reason a UBI or negative income tax is to be regarded as left wing - Richard Nixon, of all people, almost introduced a negative income tax bracket in the US, and Milton Friedman championed the concept, generally as a preferred alternative to a minimum wage.
The people that hate these ideas most are those bureaucrats, either in government or companies, that think they know better who deserves what and how to redistribute it. If the Liberals were to introduce a UBI you can bet the "Universal" would be subject to interpretation by some caste of bureaucrats and not simply applied to everyone.
While this is clearly a terrible incident the fact we apparently conduct live fire drills near active gas wells . . . it's a bit shocking. Do we seriously not have somewhere to do this where we don't have gas wells?
