Your user name confuses me.

I use my account, I just don't really post or comment. I get people trying to reset this account 3 -6 times a month, every month.
badfish
I don't know any of them.

The Mennonites are like Amish Lite.

but I can do that for half the price with a netbook.
I have been thinking about buying the Archos 7 Home Tablet, which is $199 but I have not yet seen it in person. Mostly for couch surfing, taking places when traveling. I could get a netbook, the tablet seems a little easier to carry and hold.

Ironically, this is also the real explanation behind the lie nerds tell themselves called "the friend zone".
badfish
which is why I said it was irrelevant whether someone has used the import tool or not.
Ooohhhh. My thing was it was not truly automatic as it required THE OTHER person to use the import tool. So you are automatically suggested to them without doing anything on your part, but Gmail and FB are not automatically doing it without human intervention.
badfish
One of the few BestOfs I have upvoted. Bravo!

There's a gaping hole in regards to Gmail contact lists that bypasses Facebook's privacy settings, and for people who value their privacy for whatever reason, that's a big problem.
So basically, regardless of whether or not you've used the import tool yourself, someone on Facebook will see your profile if you're contacts and you sign up with that Gmail.
See that's my point. If the other person used the import tool and has your email address, it will look as if Gmail shares your contacts without your consent. But in fact, OTHER people shared their contacts with consent, but you were on them.
When I get home from work, I will create a fake Gmail account, then add my real Gmail address to the contact list. I will not add fake Gmail to real Gmail contact list. I will then sign up for a fake FB account without using the import tool.
it doesn't take much to be a contact with someone on Gmail.
That's why I still use my Yahoo address for people/friends/family and my Gmail just for websites/subscriptions, etc.
badfish
Without having to import my contact list, it did.
Do you know for a fact they have not done the import to see who they know on FB? So say you sign up for FB with [email protected] and say no to importing or letting FB "look" at you contacts to see if anyone you know is on FB. However, your twin sister, svtbertha has your email addy in her Gmail contact list. It turns out that she has in the past used the FB tool where she allowed FB to look at her Gmail contacts. It "remembered" your addy, saw you signing up and made the connection to "friends you might know."
You raise some interesting facts but without knowing what the other people have done with their FB and Gmail accounts, we can't prove anything.
EDIT: You may be okay with the "automatically" in the title, but I say it is not automatic because it requires one of the 2 people involved to use the "hey FB, look at my contacts" tool.
badfish
Not the case. I signed up with a Gmail account. FB asked to see my contacts so it could see if I had any friends on FB already and I said no. That's not automatic.
badfish
Sounds more like an add-on someone should build rather than something reddit needs to do. Hell, they can't even make a search that works, but it isn't Amazon's fault.
badfish
The other person has to link their FB and Gmail accounts. If you have a Gmail account and sign up for FB, FB does not automatically know who your Gmail contacts are unless you let it.
badfish
NO PART OF REDDIT SHOULD BE TECH SUPPORT.
This is wrong. Things should make the front page if a sufficient number of people upvote it.
badfish
Exactly. What AA said.
What are the up/down votes for if we don't utilize them. Also Ubuntu is a community project. It seems a bit closed minded for users here to be against tech support questions with inclusion method already there--down/up votes.
It is as if you are saying, "most of us already know Linux pretty well, so those of you who don't should go elsewhere and not trifle us with your ignorance."
Let me remind you of this statement from the Ubuntu website:
*Ubuntu is created by open-source developers because we believe that everybody should access to the best possible technologies.
This passionate global community works together to continually evolve the best systems in the world and then make them available to everybody, absolutely free.*

Maybe wait a bit. Seriously. I have been there myself.
Also, if you go get a dog, remember that the "cage" is more like a fort. Lay a folded blanket over the top as a loose roof. It helps them feel protected.

I wish my "dead" website had a little over 38 million views.

Who pays for broken sticks, missing balls, etc?
Great idea, thanks for it!

Title is misleading. Gmail will add your email address to the contact list of anyone who emails you. So at any point, if they use the "find friends" feature in FB where they allow it to look at their Gmail contacts, FB then knows that you are somehow connected to them, even if at the time they decline to add you as a friend on FB.
Here's what messes with people's head. FB "remembers" that it saw your email address connected to that person, and thus will periodically recommend the two of you to each other.
Another thing which is not related directly to email address but also messes with people as far as FB recommendations is this: People can hide that they are friends with other people. So you say "person X" is friends with 4 of your friends, but person X does not allow their non-friends to see their friends. So if you are able to see that person's profile, you will not see any friends in common, but you still could have been recommended to that person. (An example of this I had was my friend's cousin was recommended to me but I never met her. The cousin was friends with my friend, the friend's BF and sister.)

Others have mentioned upgrading the RAM which should speed it up.
You may also want to look around geeks.com and mwave.com. I have seen refurbed netbooks and notebooks for under $200.
