I like it on layouts that have a lot of whitespace, but as soon as layout gets dense it looks crap

When you link an external stylesheet to an html file you have to tell the html where to look, relative to itself, for the stylesheet.

If you have, for example, a simple one page website with a single stylesheet for it to reference, they are likely in the same folder so that is the first example, it doesn't have to 'go' anywhere it just looks for style.css in the same place as index.html.

However if you have multiple stylesheets (Say for organisation sake you separate layout, typography, etc.) it makes sense to have a subfolder of stylesheets to keep them all together. In that case next to index.html you may have a subfolder called 'css' to keep all your stylesheets in. In this case the link to reference the CSS has to tell it to look first into the CSS folder, then for the relevant stylesheet... css/style.css (looks for css [folder] then / look for style.css [file])

Alternatively you may have a massive multipage website where for organisation sake it makes sense to have all your html files in a sub folder but only one universal stylesheet that covers all of them. So in this case index.html and style.css are likely in a top level folder, but other pages: about.html, contact.html, gallery.html, etc.) are all in a sub folder. Therefore to find the stylesheet these html files will have to look outside their folder to the next level up... so ../ leave your folder, then style.css look for the stylesheet file.

Finally, one not shown here, is maybe you keep multiple html files in one folder and multiple css files in another foler, in that cast to 'look' for the stylesheet it has to go up one level to escape the html folder, then into the CSS folder, then look for the stylesheet file, so ../css/style.css being../leave your current folder,css/go into the css folder,style.css` find the file called style.css

...just go to style.css it doesn't have to look anywhere, the relevant file is right next to it.
