On this day in 1983, the Soyuz launch escape system was used for the first and only time before launch, saving the crew seconds before the rocket exploded. (v.redd.it) [Video]

Exactly how I felt when I found out about it the other day. Such an incredible last second escape.

biffasaurus

I read that it was manually triggered and they had to make a phone call to ask if they could trigger it.

On 26 September 1983, Soyuz T-10-1 was sitting on the launch pad at Baikonur, preparing to launch two cosmonauts to the Salyut 7 space station.

During the final countdown, a fire broke out underneath the rocket. The launch vehicle was already badly compromised, but the crew's Soyuz spacecraft was still sitting on top of it.

With just six seconds to go before the rocket exploded, the Soyuz launch escape system fired.

The escape system triggered firing the crew capsule away from the burning rocket and carried the two cosmonauts to safety. The launch vehicle was destroyed in the resulting explosion, but both crew members survived.

This remains the only time a crewed Soyuz launch escape system has actually been fired before launch. It wasn't an abort during ascent or even during the initial moments of flight: the rocket never left the pad. The crew, Vladimir Titov and Gennady Strekalov, were eventually able to fly to Salyut 7 on a later mission, Soyuz T-10, in 1984.

I guess the point is that there's no liability when you're pulling on real rock but you have a duty of care when making holds.

Yeah because if I default on the mortgage that will affect her credit score and she wouldn't have any control over that which seems very unfair.

How can I sell in under 1 month though, it's impossible 🙁

biffasaurus

Ok I just checked and we are indeed joint tenants. I guess the problem is even if we tried to sell it now there's not a chance things would be sorted before the mortgage is up for renewal. So what should I do?

Renew for 1 year and try to sell it in that time? The value won't have gone up much so we won't have gained much equity.

Renew for 3 years, sell it and we both get a 50% share in the equity. But she'll have to rent somewhere else and I'll rent the spare room out.

Try to find someone to go on the mortgage with me and put her out of the mortgage?

See if my parents can help, although they're both in their 70s so I don't think that's an option.

biffasaurus

I think we're joint tenants but I'll have to check our mortgage documents when I get home. If we were tenants in common that would mean I would own 100% of the equity which seems very unfair. I want her to get something out of it.

I had my ratty old bike saddle stolen the other week. Crack heads will steal anything that isn't nailed down.

How is Vinted the same as these enormous distribution centres on the other side of the world? I thought Vinted was individuals selling their used clothes, a bit like Facebook marketplace.

Please tell me we're going to get Jamie's volcano thing on the sidekick app? I'd love to give this a try.

Came here to say this, hands down the best roast in Bristol.

Yeah this, I used to use them in scouts.

Huh, I never knew Antarctica practically touched Indonesia. The more you know.

I'd love to know what it looks like inside, like how do the stairs work, some sort of hatch at the top?

Pretty obvious it's a scam but someone offered to buy something from my on Facebook marketplace. Said they only had a business account and could send it to my email address. I game them my email address and this showed up, so clearly a scam, they then called me and kept going on about trust with the £300 which is also clearly a bad sign. Hopefully nothing more comes of this.
