This is Drak's way of pulling a Hades on Harry.

On one hand, there's the Job: Recover our people or wipe them out - and hopefully some high level Blamps while we're there.

Then, the secret side mission and objective: Get Harry into [My Realm] and have a little chat that shifts his perspective on just how big the Game really is. And maybe I can delete or recruit another Starborn while he's here.

Why the subterfuge? Probably the same reason(s) the Council (and others) are so tightlipped about what Starborn, Stars and Stones, and all that is.

An instance where he speculates that being around Mab could affect something comes from Summer Knight. Mab hires him. She uses her connection with him through the debt he owes to make him stab himself with a letter opener.

Later, at a Council meeting, Morgan compels Harry to submit to an examination through Wardenhounds. (Ensorcelled stone creatures that protect gatherings of the Council.) Harry thinks it's possible that, among other things, the hounds can detect "odd energies" and that interacting with Mab could alert them to something unusual.

I can't off hand think of times when he felt "forced" to ritually cleanse himself for specific reasons. Most of his ritualistic ceremonies are about controlling for outside influences for what he's actually trying to do.

The bulk of my comment is theoretical speculation based off of instances like this.

There's a mental emotional alignment that can happen if you associate with a kind of crowd or person for a long time. Merely being in Mab's presence can shift your perspective on life and death, and right and wrong.

There's also a metaphysical residue that can attach itself to you. Harry has specifically had to cleanse himself of it a couple of times. Being close to Mab for a long time can taint (for good or ill) your own aura and attempts at performing magic, changing how you can be seen (mystically speaking) by others.
