Just skim read the opening scene, which does NOT feel Shakespearean at all; did Marlowe write this bit?

chopinmazurka

Kitch-lit was such a good line

Much Ado About Nothing is the best comedy. Apart from that I'd recommend King Lear, Richard II, Henry IV

I miss the times when academic commentary was written in such heartfelt terms

I've never quite connected with twelfth night as much as others have. As you like it and LLL are amusing. I think I just thrive in the chiaroscuro of the darkly funny plays, especially Shakespeare's caricatures of kings.

chopinmazurka

My rankings- R3, Much Ado, Hamlet and H4 tying for 3rd, King John, R2

Among the top 5 funniest Shakespeare plays, but also some extraordinarily beautiful poetry. Shakespeare in his lyrical phase. Read WB Yeats's essay Stratford-upon-Avon. Listen to Paul Cantor's lectures. There's some important distinctions to be made between the qualities of a good leader and good person.

A sense of humour. Theatricality. Richard is quite self-aware and likes to "stage-manage" his little performances (see the introduction to the old Arden edition). Yes it's a tragic play but imo Shakespeare's funniest.

I remember enjoying Andrew Jarvis in the role.

One of the best cadenza recordings. Not the subtlest but memorable

Came here to post this

I was surprised when I LEARNT about the chronological sequence of the plays. Why does King John read like an early draft of Richard III when it was written after R3?

chopinmazurka

Oh that's how you spell it! I hear it on Sam Tân a lot and understood the gist as "alright," but was never quite sure of the spelling.

chopinmazurka

This was from that convo lol

Both concerti are excellent. 1 is extroverted, 2 is brooding, mysterious, graceful. And they have my favourite slow movements in the genre, especially no 2.

I need Lauren Graham to release a full cover of this song with her OG Broadway voice (not amateur-karaoke-singer), because I genuinely think even this amateur version shows potential to surpass Whitney and Dolly, good as the latter two are.

Rory's anxious look when she realises Luke is here is some good acting from Alexis.

chopinmazurka

The way her voice falters on 'memmmmm-ories,' after he enters. You can hear her swallow the lump in her throat after she says 'joy and happiness.' Her voice almost breaks entirely on the penultimate 'I will always love you.' Just so well-acted.
