You were wearing these in 2016 and beyond?!

I was just looking up what happened to Where The Hell Is Matt not even a month ago. I haven't thought about him in a decade, and now here he is.

looks at the last few classes I need to finish my cybersecurity degree

Hmmm.

conspiracyeinstein

For sure! Good luck on your search!

conspiracyeinstein

Of course.

Oof. That's a tough one that I'm trying to deal with as well. I've been an evangelical Christian almost my entire life. Super involved in church, eventually went to a bible college, got a BS in Biblical Studies, married an evangelical girl from said school, worked in pastoral services at a couple of churches, and now ... I'm not sure.

All growing up I did what I felt like I was "supposed to" do. I checked all of the boxes. I went to all of the services. I stayed late. I spent hours in prayer (sometimes weekly, sometimes daily). I knew all of the things I was supposed to say when questions came up.

But then, I realized I didn't have any answers for myself. I had everyone else's answers. I felt that way for years. Then I stumbled upon Alex's video interviewing Rhett from Good Mythical Morning. And I watched the whole thing (around 2 hours) and I realized that was exactly where I was. I'd felt very alone up until then.

It hasn't been easy since then, either. Imagine trying to tell your wife who believes this all still that you ... don't. She's taking it as best as she can but we don't see eye to eye on things. It's tough.

All of that to say ... I don't know what I make of all this religion stuff. A lot of it feels like a way to give people hope, but has been weaponized to make people hate each other instead.

A lot of Christianity's burning Hell comes from long after Christ. Gehenna (referenced in the NT) was a flaming trash heap, but that was more than likely for a representation of complete destruction and not eternal torment. Dante's Inferno and the Sinner's In The Hands of An Angry God developed more of the fire and brimstone era. But Dante's Inferno was in the 1300s (I believe).

One book I've heard of multiple times but have not read myself is Four Views on Hell.

One question set that we'll always debate and struggle with is "Is there an afterlife? And if so, what is it?" But I will suggest avoiding anyone who says they've been there and wrote a book about their experiences.

I grew up Evangelical, so I received all of the 'going to hell' sermons. They all brought on more questions than answers.

conspiracyeinstein

I mean, after the last argumentative podcaster was shot, I'd probably lay low a bit as well.

conspiracyeinstein

Ok, well... which part(s) of Hell are the most concerning parts? Is there Biblical background to that, or is it something that has been interpreted as such over the past x hundred years? Start looking into Hell and where it's first mentioned, and who mentioned it.

If this doesn't get you sponsored, I' not sure what will.

conspiracyeinstein

I have no idea what some of these numbers are.

I always recommend digging deeper, but with one caveat. Dig deeper from both sides. Watch debates from both sides, from people who know what they're talking about. Go in open-minded, too. If you enjoy cosmicskeptic, watch some of his videos where he has debates (but more conversations, really) with people of opposing views. I also recommend turning off any sensational debate where people are shouting. Avoid the jubilee stuff (1 vs 20) as those are often very miseducated people who just want to hear themselves speak.

My son absolutely loves Rivals. He has so many hours in it. He goes hard into each event. I asked him how this one is. He just looked at me, and shook his head.

conspiracyeinstein

Does "chin" mean something I don't know?

I'm old.
