But the post said "and it isn't close". Surely that's not just a nonsense phrase that people would append to anything.

Need a cycling jersey with "DTF - Down to Freewheel" on it

The great thing is if he gets injured or crucified at Friday's practice, hell be back by Sunday.

There used to be signs for Tiburon at the Mill Valley roundabout pointing towards the soccer field and fire station. Is that not there anymore? That's what I followed the first time all those years ago.
contextplz
I also like to stretch the north end of that route up to Corte Madera-Larkspur path. More time off the road with cars and if you're doing it CCW, amazing view of Mt Tam.

I don’t enjoy taking Lucas Valley Road west from here
Also depending on time of day, the headwind can be quite stiff.

Not even just cycling etiquette. It's about as rude as cutting someone in line at the groceries. How it even needs to be spelled out sometimes is incredible to me.
"OH don't worry about me, I only have one item so I'll be quick."

But if you have a motor, they'd be a piece of cake.

The SFO area on the east side of the freeway does not seem very bike friendly
I use the SFO route from the city to get to the peninsula to see friends and ride those peninsula climbs. It's not that bad. Once you get onto Old Bayshore, Airport Blvd, and/or the Bay Trail, it's pretty much one route north south. The biggest sticky point to me is the Costco on S Airport Blvd, which they are hopefully avoiding. Oh, also the rideshare lot. Those MF are allergic to turn signals and checking their mirrors.
If OP can find a place they like to cross El Camino and not too hairy route to the bay, it shouldn't be too bad. Assuming they're headed for the east side of 101.
contextplz
Have you tried to schedule an in-person tour? That'd be the first red flag if they won't agree.

They're doing Hawk Hill and Marin Headlands loop this Saturday. Right in your sweet spot as a ride to check them out.

Used to catch a glimpse of him every so often on Paradise Loop

Shouldn't he also have to clear a bunch of arbitrary criteria by some rando on the internet?
OP wants to blame someone? Blame GB for his selection despite being "more of a road rider". Altho Olympic champs get automatic entrance to Worlds, don't they?
Guess OP WAS right to blame Pidcock for being too good after all.

It looked like it was the DS egging him back on too.

Financial issues was a huge talking point during the mens and womens Tour de Suisse and Romandie.
Also for Romandie, the G7 summit was happening around that area. Also hockey World Champs too iirc.
Edit - and now that I looked it up, they were getting ready for the TdFF Grand Departe too.

Both parties have eyes to see and both should have been paying attention and both could have responded to avoid. If the other party wasn't, you could have called out and definitely slowed or edged away, it sounds like you froze like a deer in headlights too.
As others have pointed out, you're responsible for your own safety. The same people who walk, run, and ride on MUPs are the exact same people who drive carelessly and distracted. You shouldn't have stopped exercising safe practices because you were on a trail/path.
I'm sorry you're paying for it now, right or wrong. Heal up well. (Not original commenter)

I'm sorry you took offense. Really didn't mean any.
I've taught three friends to rde bikes as adults in recent years and they were all self conscious of playing around on bikes in the parking lots.
I implore you not to be. Handling drills can and will increase your abilities and xonfidence levels whether in the parking lot or on trails.
I've riding since middle school, closing on to thirty years now. I still do riding drills, usually when I'm meeting up with some late friends.

I was thinking parking lot handling drills too. OP sounds new new. No shame, we all start somewhere.
Slow race, figure 8's, line riding, serpentine/weaving through cones/bottles/sock balls.
Bike handling skills on pavement translates. Not just for TRUE beginners, everyone can benefit. And if OP is scared of hills, some fitness can be had on the pavement first.

Ya I'm just watching for the scenery.

Try it.
Personally, if I stop for too long and eat even a bit too much, my body will go into "rest and digest" mode and think it's time to shut off. Then the rewarm-up will be long and excruciating.

Can't wait for another banger tomorrow. Can't come soon enough!
On high bike traffic roads, I usually get off and sweep it to the corner with my shoe.
Although a broom strapped to the frame might make for a good Harry Potter Halloween costume.
