It's intentional that "p2" is not preceded with a "p1". The precise meaning of "p2" is intentionally ambiguous similar to the wasip2 target and similar. (github.com)

I didn't convert but I did change my name when I transitioned - my first name I just made the Hebrew equivalent of my English name, but for my second name I chose Chaya - my original second name was Chaim after a great-grandparent, and I'd also heard that if a child survived an illness they might have Chaya added to their name, and I liked the idea of it beinga kinda of rebirth.

tbc - you're talking about the societal phenomenon being pointlessly gendered, not the tumblr post?

the compiler is allowed to evaluate a const expression any number of times it likes, which does include zero times

I don't think this is necessarily true? A generic const (i.e. an associated const, either of a trait or of a generic type), yes, but const _: () = assert!(false); always fails compilation, in my experience.

as a trans woman - part of this has to do with the way it's pronounced. compound words in English are not that different from e.g. German - English is more likely to put a space between the components, but when pronounced, both put stress on the first component. So, I did some painting yesterday, and now I have a green house; vs I built a greenhouse in my backyard. green house vs greenhouse. In the past, the latter was spelled "green house" or "green-house", and over time such compound words become more and more likely to be spelled with no separator. compare also "to-day" vs "today".

So, when people say trans woman, they tend to almost always say trans woman, which indicates that it's understood to be a compound word rather than a noun with an adjective. try saying trans woman - it sounds like you're emphasizing the fact she's a woman. The same generally applies to "cis", fwiw. So, yes, I do agree that "trans woman" should be a adjective+noun, but that isn't how people treat it in speech. Though when someone writes it "transwoman", it is very often a dogwhistle.

The Future and AsyncIterator proposals are very exciting. It'll be nice to eventually be able to put that class of bugs behind us; I've had to deal with them before and it's not nice.

Seems like they meant to generate a 256-bit random number but ended up generating a number between 0-256

Almost certainly, yeah. If the printer has a USB-B port, you could also just get a USB-C to USB-B cable. If it's some proprietary thing, it should still work the same with a C->A adapter, assuming that you've been able to print to it from macOS before. What's the model of printer?

It's funny, I was just reading the tzdata theory and pragmatics page a few days ago, which discussed how there are plans to discontinue leap seconds by 2035. Serendipitous, I suppose!

Though, as Alan Fisher pointed out about the Union Pacific-Norfolk Souther merger, when companies consolidate to just a few big players, it makes a much more compelling case for nationalizing them.

According to Wikipedia, "the three Christian patriarchates of Jerusalem and the government of Armenia have publicly expressed their opposition to any political division of the [Armenian and Christian] quarters." Though it does seem to not represent non-Armenian Christians at all.

I mean, you could do this with English, too, except it wouldn't be as interesting because it's not as ~*exotic*~ as Hebrew. Retrofitting ideography onto a phonetic system is just confusing at best.

What I'm realizing with this is that I always thought "thin-crust" to be the opposite of deep-dish (i.e. normal pizza), but it isn't really - and in most cities it's probably either the opposite of thick-crust or just not used as a term. Before now if you'd said "thin-crust is unique to Chicago" I'd have said "no, thin-crust is the default style of pizza everywhere", but given that a defining feature of "tavern-style" is its thin crust, that feels like a pretty reasonable name that was already in common use before tavern-style.

What is an "Anti-Zionist traditionalist"? Like, Orthodox, or what? And I just think that in diasporic usage (or at least in the US), the magen david is much more of a universal Jewish symbol than the menorah, regardless of its origin of popularization. I've talked to Israeli antizionist friends who say that in Israeli society it does represent the state, and thus they have a gut negative reaction to it in any context, which is fair and makes sense. But that doesn't negate the way it's used in the diaspora and has been used for the past hundred+ years. Maginei David on gravestones, on synagogues, on yellow badges, are certainly not all indicating affiliation with the Zionist movement or with Israel. If you saw graffiti of a crossed-out magen david, would you really think "principled antizionism" before you thought "hate crime"?

This is really cool! If types besides bits are emitted, how does that get outputted from the assembler?

I suppose you could work AOC's campaign for midterms.

What does DSA stand for in this context?

I do it fairly frequently, including at night, and there's few issues.

There’s no way that we can know what braces were used, not in a pre-expansion lint anyways.

Surely that should be post-expansion?

Yeah, I have that on my bookshelf and just realized that this is what the cover is referencing.
