90% of what you hear isn't even the DAC, it's the amplifier.

The 6G has significantly lower amplifier output impedance, which means that the amplifier will maintain tighter "control" over the earphone driver and won't let it ring at it's harmonic frequencies as much, which reduces distortion.

This makes a tangible difference to what you hear and literally alters the frequency response of the headphones. The effect will be more noticeable the lower your headphone impedance. Many modern headphones and IEMs have very low impedance, so the effect is very noticeable and clearly audible on these the most.

Here's the rub: many older headphones (and speakers) were acoustically designed for high amplifier output impedance. The actual headphone is designed around the driver ringing a little bit, so even though it's not "ideal", it was built that way. This is why people think some headphones sound best with different amplifiers, or even tube amps (which have very large output impedance).

It's all subjective at the end of the day, but generally the 6G should sound technically superior on modern equipment.

Question: Is it possible/safe with the current design to put some kind of supercap on +15V and GND (J3)? Or would it need some diodes to protect the USB-C side from backflow current?

One issue I consistently have with USB-C chargers is that they cut-out for a few seconds when new devices are connected because they're re-negotiating, i.e. they're designed to be USB-C chargers and not power supplies. If the converter enough of an internal charge to last 5 or so seconds to survive temporary power cuts on the USB-C side, this would legitimately be a perfect adapter.
