For some reason this Reddit post was right next to this one in my feed.

Troy PD did say the names are going to be released. So I assume it will happen, and if not... that can be something for the TU to follow up on.

dangoodspeed

The headline just says "Troy PD officers fight each other"... nothing about shoving.

And I can say with certainty... 99% of the fights I've seen, no one was arrested. It's crazy that people think "fight = 100% arrest" and downvote you if you say people can't fight without being arrested.

dangoodspeed

I would say 99% of the fights that happen, bar fights or whatever, nobody is arrested. I have no idea of the severity of the police fight, but in general "fight" doesn't mean arrest, whether it be cops or regular folk.

dangoodspeed

I would say it myself, but I don't want to sound too braggadocious.

dangoodspeed

For a fight? Was someone shot or at least needing hospitalization?

I mean, patching your PHP is easy, and if your server is patched... it's really not a big deal.

The steal my bitcoin site, the creator specifically asked people to try to break into it, inviting a lot more attempts than a typical site would get as the hackers aren't really concerned about prosecution or doing anything illegal. The server set up was known, and there was a known cash prize if you succeed. There are a lot of reasons why this site was expected to be exploited where most sites wouldn't be targeted.

And now a week after the patches were released, I imagine it would be difficult to find any vulnerable site of value.

dangoodspeed

Were the cops arrested? If not, that's not really a good comparison.

During covid on my monthly trips between Chicago and NYS on the Lakeshore Limited, the train was mostly empty. I still stayed in a sleeper for social distancing, and when I went to eat, I would have the whole diner car to myself.

dangoodspeed

How long ago was that? I remember people talking politics all the way back to the 80's when I was a kid.

dangoodspeed

Looks like the site was hacked after 19 hours.

dangoodspeed

Was the screen not where the image labeled "screen"? If not, why not just edit it to show where the screen was instead of making a line that goes through the back of the theater and not really explaining where the screen was?

dangoodspeed

How did they react to being told to choke on their pizzas?

dangoodspeed

Do we still do web support over the phone?

Most people at that time didnt own slaves

Except most did. A historical study of eight Virginia counties found that about 75% of households owned slaves during Jefferson's era. Insisting otherwise is just denying the truth and applying your presentism fallacies.

dangoodspeed

I guess. Like I could make the choice to cut other things out of my life to get an EV. I guess there are choices. Though most of your argument comes from the fallacy of presentism.

dangoodspeed

I'm anti gas car but I still drive a gas car until I can afford an EV. I imagine in that time if all his competition had slaves, he couldn't run his business without them, even if he didn't like slavery.

As a PHP developer, I'm especially curious about the downtime. My team spent a few minutes patching our main server running PHP 8.3 Wednesday morning. And then just safeguarding our old PHP 7.3 server until a 7.4 patch was released on Thursday, so we upgraded to that, patched it, and that was done.

And that said, we never took any of our servers offline because this hack is extremely difficult to do, especially in the first few days as the hackers try to figure out how to do it, and the process would be different from server to server. And whenever they do figure it out, 90% of the websites are patched and safe.

So it is really important to patch in the first few days, taking the sites offline feels a bit extreme, and not having it done by Thursday evening is a curiosity... do they have some super unique PHP install that the released patches don't work on?

As far as concerns about AI... for whatever it's worth... I'm a full-stack developer currently rebuilding my personal site, and while I'm using AI for pretty much all of the back-end coding, I asked a few different models to come up with a few dozen different designs for the new site, and while they're all fine... I don't like any of them as a representation of what I do. I'm going to have to do the design myself. AI is good for people/companies who just want a basic design that works... but for something with real personality, professional human designers are still definitely better.

I think I'd set the bar a bit higher there... I've been a PHP dev for 15 years and I didn't know his name. I would guess most web application developers like myself also don't know him. He seems to be better known to people who work with Debian and Ubuntu, which I've never done.

Similarly, for friends in "Find My", the list always reshuffles just as I go to click the one I want to see the location of.

And keeping with Airdrop... when my wife and I are sitting on the couch and she Airdops a photo, it should go to my phone which is right next to hers, but instead I hear the ping in my office 20 feet away from my iPad. Why?

dangoodspeed

I think he could have made a bigger impact if he actually showed up and told Trump how he felt, rather than just not going.

still have fond memories of Tom in our top 8.

Well, I remember at the time how everyone seemed to hate Tom being in their top 8 and were super happy when Myspace started letting people change that.

Though that also ended up removing me from people's top 8's... as I was one of the first people on Myspace, I was pretty much #2 after Tom in all of my friend's top 8's.

Aw man! I just had my daughter in the playground almost right below that window.
