Can someone explain dependent typing to me? I have little experience in Haskell,

Ignorance is bliss.

defunkydrummer

you're truly a Lesser Acolyte of Touba No He

defunkydrummer

How moral! How moral! Commenter is probably a Rustacean.

defunkydrummer

I'm a CTO. Does the survey requires one to know or have used Clojure? My current job includes mantaining a big platform in Java. If I had to target the JVM and had lots of time to re-train my developers, i'd probably choose Scala, not Clojure.

Consequences will never be the same.

I've been working in 'C', off and on, for nigh on 40 years. I absolutely guarantee, with ZERO chance of being wrong, that I can write anything you want in 'C', better than you can in any language of your choice aside from assembler. It will be more efficient, smaller, and faster.

Touting these new fangled silly languages, which are built on top of languages like 'C', is silly. If you learned how to write stuff safely in the first place, which all of us did in the 70s and 80s, you wouldn't be proclaiming some idiotic new paradigm as "the only way to do things".

Seriously, just stop. I imagine you with your nose in the air, drinking white wine with a pinky extended. Okay, really, I don't, but that's the image you are pushing.

Oh, and before you start, yes, I can work in any language you mention. In any style you mention. Let me give you the answer we gave back then. There ain't no such thing as a silver bullet.

but Guido is a fan of BBC -- Better Borrow Checker

I have to follow the same process whenever I have to read junior-webshits' .py code.

Rust was created during a time when programmers were beginning to see the writing on the wall.

The buffer overflow circus that had plagued the software industry since the days of L0phed (Mudge, Grand, et al.) needed to be put to a stop.

So the real point users stood up: they took it upon themselves to invent a model that leveraged the idea of morality and placed a significant importance on what it was capable of bringing forth into a newer, larger picture: safety.

Through this we've been able to rejoice in the fact that, once more, the industry is ours again.

We have claim.

By the second law of thermodynamics all code will eventually converge to javascript

Yes, this is the point where "maximum enthropy" is achieved.

defunkydrummer

You can't do that with Rust because "Rust's type system" is literally just the vague concept of "a type system that is safe". The implementation of this ideal in rustc can have flaws, but Rust itself cannot, because Rust itself has no flaws by definition.

Worrying about the exponential time complexity for Rust's type checker? Yeah implementation of the type checker has flaws, but Rust itself has no flaws by definition. Only implementations can have flaws. Next time, make sure to use no Rust implementation at all.

defunkydrummer

try thinking a variety of different random thoughts until the borrow checker accepts one of them.

or until you run out of tokens

i can confirm that rustaceans enjoy BBC

I'd recommend Practical Common Lisp, but Land of Lisp is cool and cute.

defunkydrummer

That's what I hear. Is it homoiconicity or something else?

It is a combination of:

  1. Interactive development with full support, even baked into the language standard itself. Interactive development has first-class support in Common Lisp.

  2. Procedural macros with full power. And also, you can freely use reader macros, something Clojure doesn't really have.

  3. the CLOS object-oriented system, with multi-methods (multiple dispatch)

  4. The exception handling system (the "condition-restart" system) is the Rolls Royce of exception handling.

  5. Runs almost anywhere

  6. Compiles to native code, and does it very quickly.

These were ranked in order of importance, in my opinion.

defunkydrummer

but the JVM is one of the great achievements in CS.

Yes it is. And at the same time, Java the language is one of the most underwhelming software of all times.

defunkydrummer

the power of lisp with full access to the Java ecosystem

You can easily access any Java/JVM library from Common Lisp by simply switching your implementation to ABCL (Armed Bear Common Lisp).

You can interactively instance Java objects from classes, call methods, etc. In fact it is even useful for doing java debugging, since you get all the interactivity of Lisp but can manipulate Java objects. This is dead easy on ABCL.

They were not contemporaries...

I'd say Messiaen is Debussy after he took lots of LSD

Yesterday I listened to a very good interpretation of Bolero. It contains Ravel's genius on carefully choosing musical timbres, so it is difficult to call it the "worst" piece. On the other hand, every other piece by Ravel moves me more, so perhaps it IS the worst piece by MR. But still, good.

defunkydrummer

Bingo... tosser piece, and I'm LvB's biggest fan

defunkydrummer

I love R-K's Scheherazade, so I can't conceive him writing something deserving of the words "cheesiest".

I must listen to that concerto !

GS-1 ... I have the Pentax 6x7 system, and I never felt a strong need for a GS-1 only because the lens variety is very limited for the GS-1.

SQ ... i don't like the square format, so i don't use it.

ETR ... love it with all my heart

technically 645 should be sharper on GS

No, this is not correct.

defunkydrummer

There are three 40mm lenses:

  1. First version 40mm MC, it has a chrome nose (chrome filter ring)

  2. Second version 40mm MC, all black chrome nose

  3. PE version

So, which version do you have?

Mi presupuesto es más alto que eso.
