yeah, until you're used to lifting heavy things with nails they're just gonna break even with gloves. It happens, they grow back.
I have to repaint and reshape mine every couple weeks since once the polish starts chipping, the nail is usually next.

If you need more build space, you could drop stuff on the ground and scrap it. It'll let you go beyond the normal build limit. Pipe weapons work great.

It's so interesting seeing other peoples play styles.
I usually prefer 1 str 1 end survival with health scaling from levels disabled. 80 carry weight tends to be enough for me, gets me a primary, a sidearm, 20-30 bullets, and some food and water, and leaves enough capacity for whatever else.
