You can find out about the crime after it was committed and still be charges with accessory. Also, in the US you can (and usually will) be charged with murder if someone (even an accomplice) dies in the course of committing a felony, regardless of how that person dies or who kills them. If you are robbing a bank and a guy walking by on the street looks in and sees it, then has a heart attack and dies, everyone who was involved gets charged with murder.

In the US, failing to report a crime is sufficient for being charged as an accessory. It is uncommon except in cases of murder where it is almost always pursued.

I thought everyone's mother taught them this at about 14 years old.
