Another centrist, liberal democrat would have kicked this republican authoritarian takeover further down the road. Sure, we wouldn’t be dealing with it right now, but who’s to say Trump or some other capitalist dressed as a populist wouldn’t win and do the same thing in 28 and beyond. I’m not saying it would be all bad, not even close… under Harris we would have probably seen steps towards more healthcare expansion, infrastructure, clean energy, immigration courts expanded, financial aid for new families etc. All that being said, If the only elected official that was different was the president, it would have been a tough battle to get any of it passed, and they would have likely impeached her anyways with 2 majorities in congress - just to be petty. We also would have definitely seen proliferation in the war on Gaza, albeit not as brazen. Now with Maga Mussolini, he’s platforming actual populist leaders from the left like Mamdani, Graham Platner and the like. With complacent democratic voters for 4 years and just a bunch of slow news days, I think we would have strayed further from real leftism and be caught in a spiral of 2016 and 2020 type elections for years. A lot of this is based off of speculation, but things are gonna get worse before they get better for most voters between now and the next election, and I think it’s gonna set off a wave of democratic socialist-type legislators.

As with anything as big as the American government: theres so many moving pieces and unexpected events that it’s not worth pontificating on what could have been. Rather, we should keep reporting on what they’re doing , keep it in the new cycle, and try to be better in the future.
