Basically any of the various mainstream common distros can do your list of tasks.
If Gaming is a Primary focus and you would like a SteamOS/SteamDeck type experence with a console like Game Mode option. Check Bazzite.

my experience...
no isues with my older (1-2 yr) AMD GPU.
I had moonlight/sunshine sort of working for a long time, I recently removed/reinstalled sunshine following the new guide that was mentioned in a Popup on my Bazzite desktop, it's now working great. better than it ever has.
No idea what HDD is/does..
No update issues that I can recall in the last 6+ months.

I will mention, that when doing Arduino programming in other systems/distribution, my user had to get added to the proper GROUP to have access to the usb-serial device.
which group is required depends on the distribution, I recall Debian and fedora it was the "dialout" group.
Also once a Distribution came with the brltty (braille devices) service installed and that caused issues with my Arduino programming.
I have not done any Arduino work on cachyos so can't say what tweaks may be needed, if any. good luck.

keep an eye on the humble bundle site, they often have good deals on a variety pack of Linux related books.
Even the older O'Reilly books and others can be found at used book stores on occasion, are worth grabbing any you happen to find interesting.
An old book on "using vim" is still going to be of some use. Same for these other "old school" Linux topics.
it's amazing what one can do with tools like awk and sed. And there are books out covering just those commands.

I learned back in the age of Dialup, with the use of the O'Reilly books.
I would skim read through a book, so I knew where to go and read in more details if I need some specific information or other solutions.
Ar one time I had a huge printed book that was the various man pages.
I learned about all sorts of commands just flipping through that thing.

I have not tried kaori, but there is a program for Linux (and other os) called Mango (or something like that) which you can browse manga using the various Mihon extensions.
there was a post about the tool a few weeks ago In this sub.
I will try to check out kaori later if I can find the time.

I keep a generic .desktop file in my templates directory .
doc_willis
try the flatpak version?
it is possible to import the protonvpn config files to the default gnome or kde network manager UI, but I don't know if mint has a similar thing.
importing lets you use protonvpn without needing the protonvpn specific GUI tool.
but you do miss out on some features.

for a NTFS drive with deeper filesystem issues, you should scan and repair it with a real windows install.
I hear there is some work on making better NTFS tools under Linux, but using a real windows install would still be the safest option to fix a problem drive.
same hard drive since like 2017
so it's a 10 year old drive.. I hope you have backups made. Drives can fail at any time.

you image the .iso file to a USB, using a tool like fedora media writer, the USB will then work as an installer USB and have a live desktop session. "installing" is not quite the right term. It's a bit nuanced I guess.
It is possible to boot a USB then do a normal install onto a second USB drive.
You can then "install" Bazzite to another drive using that live USB by running the installer tool from that live USB.
I have not tried the Bazzite live USB desktop, so I can't say what limits it has .
doc_willis
I can't say I have had any issues with Bazzite "occasionally freezing".
I don't use any AV software.
I have heard of no privacy concerns.
There may be some hardware surveys from valve, and perhaps some software may "phone home" or ask to send crash reports, but nothing like what happens in windows.

be sure to check out
it and the project guttenburg site are a great way to find old (often very old) books.
doc_willis
I have bought numerous DRM free ebooks on the Humble Bundle site.
Just pay attention, because not all of their Bundles are DRM free books, some are deals from a 3rd party book site (like Kobo and others?) which will only work as far as I know with the Kobo or other specific reader.
Of course there are ways to de-drm various books, but I rarely bother with that.

I will have to double check, but last time I used an external USB drive for steam game storage (ext4) via my Dock, steamos/steam was auto mounting and showing the games on the drive automatically.
I don't recall needing to touch /etc/fstab on my SteamDeck at all.
But the last time I tried this setup was back in February. So perhaps some updated have changed things.

My Nvidia gaming desktop has been fine on Bazzite there were a few graphical glitches in the gameode UI, but the games ran fine.
I am using an older (4+yr old) Nvidia card on that thing.
Appimages work fine.
doc_willis
I thought Bazzite now has a live USB feature to test out. But I never tried it.
in the past the Bazzite USB was only an installer USB, no live desktop.
but I think they changed that earlier this year.

You should mention what work/tasks/stuff you want to do on the system.
But almost all the mainstream distros are good enough for most common tasks these days.
Use the tool ventoy http://ventoy.net to make up a Multi-iso live usb and test out as many distros as you want.

latest Linux version like Zorin, Linux mint and Ubuntu,
Those distributions are all closely related, and there is no 'ubuntu 20' unless you mean 20.04 or 20.10 or something like that.
Zorin and Mint are based normally on a Ubuntu LTS release, which I think would be 24.04 for those 2, So even the 'latest' release of those 2 would be a bit outdated.
Ubuntu has 26.04 out now which would be the latest Ubuntu.
If that release fails to work correctly, You could always go try some non-ubuntu based distro.
Of course if the sound card worked on a ubuntu 20.xx release, then it would be very odd that its not working on a much newer 26.xx release
Its possible the sound card is just missconfigured and the volmes/default device is set wrong.
You could test out the latest Fedora Live USB, or any of a dozen+ other Distros if desired.
Make notes of what ones work with the sound card, and what kernel modules/drivers are in use on the working vs non working Distros.
Also - If dual booting, disable any fast startup option in the bios/firmware, and perhaps power off and boot directly into linux, dont boot to windows then 'reboot' into linux.

I would be legally obligated to get the birds permission, and sadly he was holding out and asking for too much sunflower seed to justify.
So this is all i can afford.

I would use the sudo NTFSFIX command and it worked like a charm.
I will suggest some caution, the ntfsfix command only corrects a few rather basic issues. It cant fix deeper filesystem corruption, and I have heard it can make some corruption situations worse.
doc_willis
I don't get what the magnets function is.
I have some 7+ different docks , they all basically work fine for the most part, they can all be quirky at times.
doc_willis
might be easier to use networking and sunshine/moonlight.
many media players can play video streams from capture devices.
doc_willis
launch it from a terminal, look for error messages.
you could just use the flatpak command line to install extra software.
doc_willis
you could test with a fedora live USB to see if it works.
I have several old old printers and scanners that have support dropped by windows, and they still work on my Linux systems.
but they are like 15+ yr old now.
I have seen some diskmimager tools for android, but its possible they required a rooted device.
I have never used those kind of tools.
etchdroid is one such tool.
Google search mentions another.
