Here's a problem that doesn't get enough discussion: Companies do not have open roles to fill because no one is leaving their job! Only economic growth will jolt the job market and force companies to create new roles.

Hell, teachers don't even look like teachers anymore. I've seen teachers in classrooms wearing sweatpants and even yoga pants. No one gives a shit

I like the idea of learning a new and in demand skill that will allow you to be self employed in the future. In the USA skilled trade (plumbing, electrician, trucking, etc) allows this.

I'm also from the Bronx, I will tell you what I wish someone told me when I was 22:

This won't get you a job soon, but keep an eye on the DCAS website for exam dates. Check every month, the exams for sanitation, bus driver, and train operator get listed there along with a bunch of other job exams. If you want a job ASAP look for traffic agent and school agent, those will call you back within 12 months if you scored high. Stay away from corrections, that job will destroy you.

The others I mentioned will take many years, but they are great jobs. Take those exams now while you are young, and when you're 30 you might have a great job with a pension, you could retire at 50-55 and chill.

For now, I recommend going to BCC or BMCC and get those college credits, some city jobs require college credits.

Stock is down 58% in 2026, I would definitely be prepping if I worked there.
