I agree with you, but here is a special case! SN Refsdal (http://arxiv.org/abs/1411.6009)!

It is a supernova with a massive galaxy cluster between it and us . The galaxy cluster acts as a lens and the result is several images of the same supernova in different parts of the sky. Since the distance the light travels is different in each case, the light takes a different amount of time to reach Earth. There are several predictions (http://arxiv.org/abs/1411.6933, http://arxiv.org/abs/1411.6443), but generally, each lensed image of the supernova (in the background galaxy) appears to us to appear at different times, over the course of months or years, but the images themselves are spatially very far apart, much larger than galactic scales.

I always like peoples replies, they are crucial to keeping this inline.

I'm with you, was told 6.5 but actually 5.25. I'm guessing, but lucky for you rings come standard in 7 so you only had to get it resized once...

Read that as "God bitched at the choir director as soon as mass ended"

The actual engine that drives the explosion (and produces the neutrinos) starts and stops within 1 second at the center of the star (the neutrinos will continue to come for 10s of seconds as the neutron star cools). The shock wave that the explosion produces travels around 10000km/s. But the star the explosion occurs in is very big. If it is a red supergiant it could take around a day for the shock to get out, and therefore the neutrinos will get here a day before any visible light photons.

To continue the thread of small corrections, this is a bit off:

But if fusing two atoms into each other produces a (relative) pop rock's worth of energy, fusing the protons and electrons of those atoms produces a missile's worth. its a lot more energy, all at once, and that sudden energy makes the supernova.

Fusing 4 protons to helium ultimately releases 28MeV or ~7MeV per proton. But, the electron + proton interaction you talk about actually costs energy. It is NOT the source of energy in supernova.

The source of energy is gravity. When all the atoms in the iron core (about 1056 of them) collapse under gravity they gain about 200MeV per proton (or neutron) each. This is where all the energy comes from.

evanoc

wow, that was unsettling...

Chad Vangaalen - Soft Airplane - Molten light

excerpt

"They dumped her body into the molten light

Floated to the surface and it did not ignite

She rose up slowly and walked to the shore

She stood up on the bank and whispered

I’ll find you and I’ll kill you

I’ll find you and I’ll kill you

I’ll find you and I’ll kill you"
