Hooray! Update installed, no reboot required.

For a home network where you have full control over the devices on said network, if something is suddenly requesting you open a port via upnp when you don't want it to, you have other problems.

It's not like it's the '00s with shitty consumer routers that accidentally put their upnp interface on the WAN side too, unless you really go out of your way to fuck up opnsense's defaults.

Set a couple of rules - turn on default-deny then only allow upnp port mappings on devices that actually need them (your gaming devices) and you should be fine. I remain unhacked after doing this for like, uh, 25 years. My first couple of consumer-grade routers liked to leave ports open randomly but opnsense is much, much better about this.

In the late '90s in junior high school computers class, my assigned computer was a former teacher's PC that hadn't been fully scrubbed. It had the HP network printer administration tools on it. I changed the "ready" message to say "FEED ME!" and nobody batted an eye.

I stopped using Facebook on Android in like 2014... first it used up like 4 hours of battery per day even while in the background, at random - sometimes almost nothing, sometimes "screw you phone's dead just after lunch".

Fine ok I'll just use it through the web app. You can even add a homescreen icon and everything. I turned off most notifications because I didn't like being pestered at work...

Then it started sending me a notification that simply said "You have notifications!"

I threw it in the dumpster like two days later and I've never run another Meta/Facebook mobile app again.

Early HD-DVD vs early Blu-Ray there were some very clear advantages HD-DVD had, mostly down to codec usage and requirements.

For whatever reason many early Blu-Ray discs used MPEG-2 releases but almost all HD-DVDs were VC-1 or AVC (aka H.264). This gave you much better image quality per megabyte of data on the disc, which meant long movies didn't have to get overcompressed to fit.

HD-DVD also mandated some additional surround sound audio codecs (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD).

First-gen Blu-Ray players were also horrible, the first one I saw was literally an embedded PC with a Pentium 4 in it(!!) and it made a ton of noise.

The energy is free. The rest of the system isn't.

Right now the energy isn't free and the rest of the system is also not free.

This isn't actually completely true and works to the detriment of some of the manufacturers. I remember advances in lithium ion chemistry boosting the average cell voltage very slightly and then the manufacturer is not being able to advertise the actual higher capacity because they were stuck with milliamp hours.

It was minor, like a .05 volt boost or something, but it wasn't zero.

The keyboard shortcuts I use are just:

- next/previous article in the currently-selected feed (set to j and k here)
- toggle current item read status, so I can leave something I glanced at unread (set to r)
- toggle favorite (set to f), I guess for your app the equivalent would be 'add to read later' or something
- open original website in new tab (set to v)
- close open article (esc)

I also used to have a shortcut (set to semicolon) to open the selected article in a background tab (i.e. Feedly stayed focused instead of it switching tabs to the article) but that needed a browser extension that broke and I haven't figured out how to make it work on FreshRSS.

I appreciate you've written the backend by hand, but it's odd to see it tagged "Release (No AI)" and then read "I did rely more on LLM for the frontend as it's not my strongest area" 🤷

That being said I did give it a minute to compare to my current FreshRSS setup and the main things I'm missing out on are
1) delay before marking as read when an item is selected and
2) keyboard shortcuts. I customized FreshRSS to match Feedly's keyboard shortcuts and I barely use the mouse while reading - only when switching major categories.

I lived near a Value Village for a while. It was kind of a mixed bag. One one hand, if you had something of no value that you wanted to get rid of they'd take it, but on the other it was annoying because people would steal clothes then leave them in the alley when they tried them on and they didn't fit... so my alley was always full of random crummy clothes.

Anyway, I was waiting around one day for something and decided to just walk over there and they had an identical double-bay hard drive dock to the one I had at home already, but it was the newer revision with UASP instead of USB Mass Storage. It was missing the power supply, so they wanted three bucks. What a steal! I just used my power supply with it and away I went. The same thing new was like $49.

My wipers were nine years old and I changed them this summer. The pattern they were failing to clean looked exactly like your photo.

Basically they just fail to keep continuous pressure across the windshield due to them being old so it lets little thin layers of water stay put.

The suggestions other people have made about cleaning the windshield can't hurt either.

You can also simply try cleaning the wiper blades. Gently wipe up and down the rubber of the blade with a microfibre wetted with vinegar or washer fluid or a dish soap+water mix or even isopropyl alcohol (like 70% or lower). You might be surprised how many times you can wipe them before they start coming away clean.

There are AC thermostats that switch line power.

In some places there's complicated relationships with solar panel laws that might make solar+heat pump cheaper as your main source of heat, but this requires reading a lot of irritating local regulations or talking to someone who wants to sell you a solar system no matter what.

evilspoons

Hmm. The devices I have pick one MAC and keep it per-network when MAC randomization is on. I have to explicitly tell my phone to start randomizing every time it connects.

As long as the forest is replaced to maintain its complete biomass, it's not a terrible idea. But it's also not the complete solution for global CO2 levels.

Some people like to have clutter-free surfaces. Some people don't have places to put things because they have small living spaces. Some people have ADHD and put things down randomly and can't find them five seconds later. Some people have kids who fuck around with stuff.

Light switches go on the wall, thermostats go on the wall, it only seems logical to put something that has light switches, thermostats, etc on the wall too? What an odd take.

You can still control HA from the phone app, it's not like a wall panel would have to be the only point of contact once you install it.

Yeah, I'll just look at my four security cameras with a speaker. Give me a break.

I have a Samsung SSD 850 Pro 512 GB from the same era. MSRP was $430 US, I think I paid about $500 CAD on a bit of a sale.

It now has 82,539 power-on hours, 135 TBW of the 300 TBW threshold, and it's reporting 88% remaining for wear levelling count.

I guess I should make a post too like OP lol

This is completely false. The complete lifecycle of nuclear is about double to triple the price per kWh versus current unsubsidized solar prices.

If I could snap my fingers and have all the oil-based power generation turn to nuclear I'd do it, I don't really have any complaints with nuclear, but it's not cheaper.

evilspoons

Yeah, for some reason when people say 'we should put more solar panels up for grid-scale production' lots of other people immediately go 'but what about the farmland' forgetting there's vast tracts of desert and shit.

evilspoons

You got me, lol

Inertial batteries aren't THAT complicated. Big spinny thing attached to motor/generator. Build a bunch of them with battery backups to keep them stable.

Heck, we could probably just take all the damn turbines in the power plants we're already using and turn them into sources of inertia once their generation capacity is not needed. It's not really that different to spin them with a big-ass electric motor when the sun is high in the sky.

And anyway, nobody is trying to do this at all right now. We just sit around inventing reasons why we can't do it instead of trying to do it and fixing problems as they show up.

You know what's awesome? FREE energy. All that oil and (to a much lesser extent nuclear fuel) we have to extract right now, which we pay a shit ton of money for? Why not divert that money to infrastructure upgrades until we're at the point of wondering why we ever extracted energy via oil in the first place?

evilspoons

Not to mention if you covered merely half of the corn-for-fuel fields with solar panels instead you'd cover 100% of the United States' energy needs. Not just fuel, but literally all energy usage.

evilspoons

This kinda rules actually. It's way, way more creative than 99% of wraps on almost any personal vehicle.

evilspoons

I've heard that the power usage self-reporting on these can be off. One was actually reading too high iirc.

Maybe calibrate your power readout by plugging it into a kill-a-watt or similar for a few days and see how that corresponds to the change on the HA feedback.
