Taxes in Belgium are insane. And what do we get in return? More taxes!

Doesn't work like that in the army. Experience goes above all that and that comes with age (usually). I've seen may officers (younglings fresh from the KMS) who got their shit kicked in when they thought they could run a show at one of the fighting units such as Bevrijding 5de linie. Most respected and listend to people in the army are the NCO's. People who say otherwise never served. In the army experience is everything. Don't listen to some Reddit know-it-all who knows about nothing. Heck, most people don't even know that in the Belgian defence there is a difference between a functional superior and a hierarchical superior.

She can sign up for the VDKMS in a few years if she wants to be an officer eventually. But it will require a big mentality change of her: a lot of studying, discipline and love for physical sports and being miserable.
Other than that, if she doesn't like studying (surprise even soldiers have to do studies while in the army, and it's not as easy as anyone thinks) she can mostly be a beroepsvrijwilliger and sign up for some administrative work, preferably in the Belgian air component (always choose airforce).

It's a problem if you make it a problem. Otherwise there will be no issues at all, except the annoying gossip that everyone suffers from. I don't think people are interested that much in your personal life. All that matters is your value to the firm.

Europe (NATO) and the US need each other, together they are unstoppable. If one ditches the other, that would be disaster for the beautiful place the west is today. I will never understand why he'd say stupid things like that.

You should have sent a quick heads up to inform your boss. For him it might have been important. Work is not only about you.
existentialism123
Belgians think of it like people in any other country would. It is pathetic if you are staying long-term to not have learned the language. Even students going abroad for 6 months come back being somewhat fluent in the language where they enjoyed their studies abroad. Plus like someone else said, knowing the language will help you in any aspect of life. Even more, I would say if you want to work in Belgium on a fairly high level knowledge of French AND dutch is a must.

Don't listen to this person. However busy you are there is always time to send just one small message to give an update. Ghosting is just rude and unprofessional. I think it has more to do with their upbringing and bad manners than actually being 'busy'.
existentialism123
Where are you from? Let's talk about what you are known from?
And you are wrong. I'm not known for it. It wasn't me, nor was it anyone else. Stop demonizing people who had nothing to do with it and point to those who are actually responsible. Grow up. You speak like an angsty little kid.
existentialism123
Every country has done horrible things - and even do today - and for sure your country too. Let's talk about all the things that happened?
existentialism123
Belgium is still amazing and one of the most benevolent countries in the world.

Not in Freshfields and Clifford. But your mileage may vary.

No we are not. Get over yourself and learn to take a joke.

You don't know that. I experienced several attorneys at small and big law who got bad reviews years on end and they stuck around. This notion if a bad review and they are planning to remove you is utter nonsense. It depends heavily on the firm's culture.
existentialism123
If you are that good and smart and coming from a very prestigious institution, then join a well reputed international law firm. Problem solved, should be easy.

Buckle down and specialise in M&A. Work a few years for a big firm 'like a robot'. Save as much money as you can. Invest that money. You should have a small network then from your work experience. Find an area in law that they need and open your firm solely specialised in that. Then look for an investment banker who brings in enough money to invest in your firm. Get close to him. Marry the banker (or lawyer). Have a few kids. Then divorce because 'work life balance'. And happily retire on your small island in Dubai!

She's a very insecure woman with a lot of mental health problems. If she doesn't change her vapid lifestyle it's pretty certain things aren't going to end well for her in the long run.

Therapy isn't going to do anything. The healthiest thing for both people is to split and never talk to each other again.

It's like I'm reading a DPRK propaganda poster.

Societies where the group goes above the individual such as China, South Korea, Japan, have much worse working conditions (hours, pay) and are in just as a bad shape or even worse than thoses societies that prioritize the individual above else. Don't make such superficial statements. Your believe that a society would be better if it would prioritize the group is manifestly ill-founded by the facts.

Ik zie niet waar ik ergens verwezen heb naar "woke-isme"? Misschien eerst eens lezen alvorens een vreemde comment te schrijven.
Not too happy about the result. Left wing and right wing Putin apologists clearly gained a lot of ground, while the middle lost its majority. Whether left or right, extremists are always bad, just two sides of the same coin.
