I had Mooseal!

eyesRus

Yep. She’s literally the coolest, most interesting person on Earth, to me. I can’t even imagine my living room not being filled with a cardboard box fort right now.

eyesRus

My daughter is 9, and we experienced very little of what you’re describing at 7 and 8. The “why” is fascinating to me. What makes our experiences so different?

It’s crazy, it only takes one or two mean kids in your specific, hyperlocal cohort to completely change a childhood.

eyesRus

Wow, this is so crazy to me. I live in NYC, and we do not have these small-town we-grew-up-together problems.

Our school contains kids who live in multimillion dollar brownstones and public housing projects. Everyone is very dedicated to equity here; no one would ever mess with the Share the Fair money!

Good luck to you!

eyesRus

That’s messed up. I would consider joining the PTA or attending meetings to try to change that.

eyesRus

We all still say pack pack from time to time!

eyesRus

Yes, the budget listed here is very small, enough for only 90-odd days. We are a big school, so this is way inadequate. This is why she asked for extra money for subs from the PTA. And we granted it. But my kid never has a sub!

eyesRus

🥹 You just made me excited to be a grandma someday.

eyesRus

Yeah, if this is the case, it is a problem as the PTA gave her 30K specifically for subs!

eyesRus

Yep! We are extremely low screen time, too. She has seen very few deaths. She was just like meh. I couldn’t believe it.

eyesRus

I loved Michael. I still love a guy in a beanie.

eyesRus

I showed it to my kid recently, and she was completely unmoved! WTF!

eyesRus

Yeah, I suspect they’re failing to use SubCentral for some reason, thus causing this problem!

eyesRus

Me too! Watched it every week while eating Kraft mac n cheese out of our red bowls.

My daughter is also 2e, but much younger at 9. She also generally refuses to be vulnerable. She hates any discussion of feelings, always has. Even as a toddler, the common advice of “name and validate their feelings” was like fuel on the fire for her. She needed (and needs) to be left alone to regulate herself. She also has a therapist, who has told us she can get very little work done because my daughter will see her attempts to “therapize” a mile away and will shut it down every time.

Your daughter could have dyscalculia. And “spiky profiles” are very common in 2e kids.

eyesRus

My kid has to do two extracurriculars, one for the body and one for the mind. She can do more than two if she wants. When she was younger, I sometimes had to “make” her, but now, at 9, she’s choosing things on her own happily.

eyesRus

Fort Greene, BK. Great location.

eyesRus

It’s a great location, many subways nearby, lots of restaurants, etc. No elevator, though. The kids…behavior could be a lot better, if you ask me. Lots of good kids but a handful of extremely challenging ones who never receive any consequences, as far as I can tell.

eyesRus

Exactly! Pay is quite decent here. I suspect our school isn’t using SubCentral at all, and that’s a problem!

eyesRus

I was offered a seat exactly 3 times my entire pregnancy

eyesRus

Scholastic has something called Share the Fair. They make it very easy to set up an equity fund that everyone can donate to, and you use that to pay for a book for any kid that shows up without money. You can even easily have everyone donate their “change” to the fund while they check out. I’d talk to your organizers!

eyesRus

If you have $25, you can do this without them. Since you’re an adult, the store will not need anything from your parents.

eyesRus

Our PTA just gave them 30K for subs…so if they aren’t using that money for subs, I’d very much like to know where it’s going!

eyesRus

It’s far less than half in upper elementary, at least at our school. But even if it were exactly half, I still don’t find that appropriate. All the students present in the room speak English, so why not speak English for one day?

She did not, in fact, have access to English materials all day. She was told to read silently or draw, literally all day (except for lunch/recess and their one specials class, of course). My daughter actually loved it, because reading and drawing are her favorite things. But even so, didn’t she receive essentially zero instructional time that day?

Yesterday, students from the grade above her were placed into her class for the day. Zero instructional time for them, too. They could not engage with their curriculum at all, as it was not even present. This feels like a problem?

eyesRus

We do have the budget, that’s the thing! The PTA just agreed to put a very large chunk of change towards this. The principal says it’s because they “can’t find a sub.” That’s why I asked here—I’m trying to figure out if all schools can’t find subs, or if there’s something specific happening at our school that we could improve somehow.

Maybe the office staff doesn’t use SubCentral often enough. Maybe there’s a culture of treating subs poorly so they don’t take jobs here. I don’t know! I’m trying to see how we can improve things.
