I just don't buy this at all. Thermostatic swing, particularly in federal midterm elections, has been a feature of American politics for over a century. It happened to FDR, it happened to Wilson, it happened to Taft, it happened to Cleveland, it happened to Harrison, etc.

well yeah this is exactly what metrics like WAR are trying to do - pool together results to get a decent sample size and attempt to control for the obvious confounders

there's definitely a lot of debate around what and how to control for those confounders, but it isn't like we don't know how to do this. statisticians try to do this all the time in all kinds of domains.
