Use nextdns to block all ads on your devices. Then you only get the Duolingo self-advertising ads, which are about ~30 seconds which is a good time to drink water, pee, stretch, etc

I actually thought you meant the phone's battery. It drains my phone's battery something chronic. (Never used to, even just a few months ago.) I mostly use the web app on my phone now, although of course that doesn't support offline lessons.

Re: the actual energy system: it turns out to be fine cos you can just watch a short ad to regain 5 energy points. Filter your device's internet connection with nextdns and you never have to see an actual ad every again. I just see duo's self-advertising ads.

I'm part of an art+music collective based in Bristol and you wouldn't believe the number of times I've had to argue with musicians who want to use ai slop for their cover art. I have stipulated multiple times that we do not accept ai anything yet still they try and even lie that it isn't

fazzster

In the UK most of us say kʰɑːkʰi afaik

fazzster

UXUI designers at Duolingo are really fucking stupid

fazzster

It doesn't read like ai whatsoever.

fazzster

Oh I tried some in the past and they wouldn't work, which have you used?

I've been trying to unlock my bootloader for months but the Xiaomi community app doesn't allow me to, even if I press "apply" 1 second after midnight (Beijing time). I have a tablet too and I can't fucking stand using it. My devices are trapped in Xiaomiland and I only bought the latest one cos I planned to unlock the bootloader and flash custom ROMs. So sick of them

this description is really useful, thank you so much for explaining it. I've been terrified of moving onto preply cos i have an account already but I never get any messages from prospective students... I guess that's because of what you said regarding the algo favouring higher availability -- mine is low cos I didn't want it to conflict with my other classes and jobs. Perhaps I'll just bite the bullet and set aside 2-3 weeks of prioritising preply availability to build my preply base. I just can't function on cambly. I get loads of students and we have great classes, but 10$/hr is dire; and more new students are more lax with timekeeping, several book and just don't arrive. So a 30 min class missed, followed by a 30 min break, gives me a wonderful $1.20 for waiting around doing jsht.

Thanks for your whole post!

Hey! This looks interesting. I'll dm you!

Probably, if you really want Google Sans, our only solution for now is to open the apk up and put an IPA-complete version of the Google Sans font inside it, then try to install it over adb or something

fazzster

Ah I didn't read your whole post properly aha sorry I was in a rush to fix it on my phone too. I think it's just a bug in the app, seems like Google gboard devs have used a font that is too stripped-back, for optimisation I guess. And they forgot that there is an IPA layout. I guess too that the other languages load their own font variants, and maybe it's handled automatically, and probably there isn't a specific "NotoSans_IPA.ttf" file. So I guess this'll get fixed whenever someone can be bothered to fix it, cos it doesn't directly affect any natural languages, and a setting inside the app itself can "fix" it too.

For a calendar app on Android, I recommend KashCal, from FDroid. It supports system calendars, WebDAV-account calendars (e.g. NextCloud), and webcal calendars (i.e. subscribing to remote calendar .ical feeds).

For synced calendar service, I'm using my own home-hosted NextCloud server. It's a bit of a headache to set up but if you're into tech and want to self-host your own things then I recommend it!

I have this too, don't factory reset for nothing. Afaik it's a problem with how Xiaomi programmed the system level of font management. Somewhere I saw it mentioned that downgrading gboard to an earlier version might help. Google auto-LLM results also suggested a Shizuku solution, which I haven't tried yet but if I get it working I'll report back with steps .

I switched to Xiaomi 6 years ago, wonderful experience. The last few years have been a freakin nightmare and I will never buy another Xiaomi device. I can't even unlock my bootloaders cos the "please let me unlock my own device, daddy Xiaomi" application process is broken

Nope

Counter-point about "Japan": the sound of the word is directly phonetically mutated from "ni-pon" so it's not the same situation as Greece or Germany

fazzster

😂 and thanks, I needed both a morning laugh and a new earworm! (I've had a random classical piece on loop (in my brain) for 4 days and it was driving me crazy)

fazzster

Yes for sure, that's why I made myself use it anyway, in the knowledge that my brain would eventually adapt :)

English spelling is a deep secret library of ancient spellings and meanings, which makes it easier to tap into & connect with civilisations spanning thousands of years. I too think it's really important to preserve etymological indicators!

In my alphabet and orthography I use φ for ph and ʞ for ch (because Χ χ look too similar to x) for Greek-origin words. I don't like theta cos it doesn't fit the aesthetic style I want for my script. Tbh thorn isn't great either imo cos of b and p but with more usage I'm able to read words correctly at a glance now

You're a real one 🙌🤝

I guess you haven't witnessed Portuguese cursive yet

Love this font
