AI project moment™️

gamr13

I just used an old PC I had lying around, some 8th gen i5 CPU machine, shoved OpenMediaVault on it and popped in the hard drives I had around, saved some from e-waste, and their health was good.

The only thing I really bought was the SATA to USB adapters (since I only have 1 usable SATA slot)

The HP Mini was €100 a couple years back, I had the RAM lying around (16GB DDR4), and the adapter was €30 each

So €160 total more or less

Best solution I ever sprang for was making my own NAS with Immich.

Dropped all cloud services immediately after. Now I've a 12TB NAS that I only pay for electricity for (and internet) rather than an additional €100/yr for 1TB cloud storage.

This would be my ideal list of features:

- Battery life, I don't mind as long as it lasts more than a day. But your phones are amazing at lasting way longer than that, so I have no issues there.
- 128GB+ Micro SD compatibility
- A good audio DAC
- J2ME support is a **requirement**, especially now with major advancements in the dumphones communities and the active development going on like DiscordJ2ME by the amazing u/gtrxAC
- Physical build wise, something like the Duoqin F22 (/pro model) would be awesome, incredibly thin, light, buttons feel amazing on it, they're nice and clicky.
- No touchscreen, no need.
- 4G data would be a bare minimum I guess nowadays considering the shuttering of 2G and 3G.
- Web browser that supports modern TLS and HTTPS.
- Simple UI which you guys do very well! I would love to see maybe an API modders can use to customise sound effects or hook in extensions to it (Not exactly this, but like this: RAM usage in the status bar beside the clock) type stuff.
- Headphone jack!! + Bluetooth headphones (AirPods) compatibility.
- FM Radio would also be very nice.

I use my W995 because it has mobile data, wifi, J2ME support, a beautiful screen, themes, ELF patches, access to Opera Mini with J2ME.

With old / dumbphones like this, a lot of people really love the customisation aspect of them, it feels more personal. The vintagemobile discord often shows people displaying cool themes on their old Nokias or Sony Ericssons and that's something I'd love to see on HMD phones.

I don't really want to see something Android based, as I value something that's lightweight (software wise) and fast. And I feel lower end hardware on Android tends to be slow and laggy.

The community has made strides in making these old phones work well in the modern era, with websites now able to hook into WhatsApp, DiscordJ2ME, Opera Mini which still works great, new music apps for Java (forgot the name, sorry), and a whole suite of revival apps for these.

Thanks for making this post u/HMD-Global-Oy and I really hope at least some of these make it into a new HMD phone as I'd absolutely *love* to pick one up that can do at the very least J2ME apps. <3

Yes, this was almost always possible with some OEMs like Honor being the only ones to block this type of command.

Now in ADB you can only disable packages instead of uninstall. This is a new limitation.

gamr13

Hey!  Having WiFi issues myself with mine, what did you downgrade to? And how can I get the downgrade package?

gamr13

If you've an AMD GPU, that's specifically the issue, the drivers never got properly fixed for it. It's way way worse on Z1E SOCs as well, the game is downright unplayable on those.

Hey! In the EU market (or at least very specifically Ireland), Delta is not on the App Store. But RetroArch is!

That’s why I advised to go through AltStore

gamr13

Welcome to your first iPhone! (I presume at least)

I switch between iOS and Android constantly, here’s my list of recommendations as a more technical user :)

  • Flacbox — Great music player for iOS, almost on the same level as Poweramp on Android (and actually has more features like cloud streaming). This is only if you store music locally for the most part.

  • Orion — This is a web browser alternative to Safari, and still runs on WebKit like Safari does, however you can have custom extensions with this browser, and it has (experimental) support for actual Firefox and Chrome extensions! This is useful because for Safari, you have to pay for a lot of the usual extensions that you don’t have to for their Firefox / Chrome versions. If you’d like some extension recommendations, let me know! I’ll give you some from my must-haves to make web browsing (on any device), infinitely nicer.

  • Delta — Delta is a console emulator that can be side loaded using AltStore (or AltStore PAL in Europe and I think Brazil now too?), it can play Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, DS, NES, SNES games and I think more too.

  • ARMSX2 — This is a PlayStation 2 emulator developed by good friends of mine and seems to be progressing well!

  • RSS Mobile, if you hate scrolling social media for your tech / gaming / whatever news, and just want something nice and simple to read articles that matter to you, this is what you want! You can find RSS links to articles or blogs or whatever it may be, put them in this app, and go! No ads, no bs, no subscriptions, it just works.

  • LocalSend — AirDrop, but cross-compatible with Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, etc. I highly recommend this for sharing files between your devices.

  • Keka — If like me you’re constantly downloading files and doing file management stuff, Keka is vital as it’ll decompress and compress files kind of like 7Zip / WinRAR on Windows

  • KDE Connect, if you want some of the cool macOS / iOS integrations on Windows or Linux. It’s very limited on iOS though compared to Android sadly.

  • Locally AI — As the name implies, it’s AI but runs entirely on your phone. Great if you want to use AI, but are concerned about privacy. Just don’t expect full ChatGPT-like responses, accuracy or depth.

Trying the beta now, been running it for the guts of an hour. Aside from indexing, it’s been just as smooth running as iOS 26.

iPhone 15 Pro Max here.

No EQ settings for AirPods showing up, beta firmware activated for my Pro 3’s and still on FW 8B40

gamr13

With the new login system, I'm hoping there'll be a way to retain my pro license without Google Play Services / Store on my phone.

gamr13

I barely remember this post being 6 years ago, but as much as Linux and macOS booted, I never used them enough to ensure stability.

After replacing the CPU, that system still works great to this day, gave it to my sibling, they’ve been using it for some light gaming

gamr13

720p upscaling did cause blur and other upscaling artifacts for Switch 1 games, without handheld boost mode enabled on Switch 2

gamr13

My biggest desire for SolidExplorer is to be able to use it on De-Googled phones. I understand I'm in the extreme minority of people, but I do love this app, and even Poweramp has integrated such a solution. An Email and Purchase ID that can be verified.

I will *gladly* pay for a separate standalone license if it means I don't have to enable / install Google's garbage on my phone.

gamr13

But how if there aren’t any ads?

gamr13

Use Plutonium, it's the best possible solution

gamr13

I've reinstalled Windows on my Surface Pro 11 about 3 times now, and still have some of the issues you've outlined here. It's awful.

Even bigger shame that Windows is literally the only option at this time due to the lack of Linux driver support.

gamr13

You're not alone, playing from Steam and the game searches for about 10 seconds, gives up, and sends me in alone.

gamr13

I wasn't aware this was going to happen

gamr13

My best advice for you brother is to use Plutonium. It's an INFINITELY better experience nowadays.

gamr13

Rest assured, never had issues with Notifications on Android 14, 15 seems just fine too!

gamr13

I don't. I still use it anyways, however, there's not much reason for it to do what it does. Everything it relies on can be pulled either directly from Apple's CDN or the direct pages for the tools it relies on.

I believe the current understanding is that it sends your devices IMEI, S/N and other identifying data to Chinese servers which *is* concerning due to clone phones / phones re-using IMEIs.

I've personally seen iPhone clones utilising S/Ns and IMEIs from genuine iPhones. Not saying 3u are selling / using your data for those purposes, but, I'm also not saying they're not, I don't know what they do, I don't really care either, just interesting to know.

gamr13

Sony did a lot of these dummy box things, especially in Europe! PSN vouchers had actual Blu-Ray boxes too, never cards until the PS4 had been out for a couple years
