Yeah, it's fair to say that delays aren't enough of a reason for it to be a "lie". Though there sure have been lots of delays

But see, in your example, to make a 1 off direct tx with the HK Free Press, you'd need to make at least 1 real BTC tx to open the channel. That completely negates the purpose of Lightning

With regards to "routing around hubs" -- this may prove to be harder than expected. Maybe there is a route, maybe not. You could maybe establish a route, but you need nodes that are always online, and an agreement with the other parties

The other thing, again, is that it costs you a BTC tx every time you want to connect to a new hub or establish a new route. So "routing around" some hubs may be expensive, and you won't know if your tx failed until you try. Maybe there are some darknet hubs that don't censor, but how well connected will they be to the ones that do kyc?

Anyway, I think it's most fair to say that lightning is not a "lie". But it's also not really decentralized either. There are likely to be gatekeepers, and those gatekeepers have considerably more censorship power than miners do

Lightning is pretty much a v2 of the existing bank+user system. Which has its use, but isn't really "crypto"

It's a "lie" because it lacks in the decentralization aspect of cryptocurrency. You can use lightning in one of two ways:

1. Open an account (on chain BTC tx + fee), connect to major hub, send funds. Receiver must then also make an on chain BTC tx + fee to export their funds. Oh, and the hub you chose could censor your transaction if it doesn't like it, unlike blockchains

2. Open a direct channel to HKFP or wherever. Now, you and them can share funds, but only after you've added BTC to that channel... Requiring two on chain transactions again. Why not just send BTC to begin with?

So basically, either lightning is more expensive (due to the extra on chain txs), or if you just leave your money on a channel connected to a hub, then they can censor you.

But also, lightning is like 2-3 years behind schedule, and still hitting major bugs. That doesn't inspire mass confidence

Edit: for those that may say "but wait, lightning network is censor resistant because it uses onion routing"... Yeah, not really. All balances and transaction amounts are visible, so it's trivial to de-anonymize people and censor them. A real nice 5 min video on the topic: https://youtu.be/rgts1qb0hLY

Ugh. Suffice to say, this is what happens when tech debt piles up so high that the board replaces all the management staff twice. Years required to dig a company out of a hole like that. Even more years if all the original devs left

I find tech debt to be a hilarious result of the engineer / management split organizational design

Management: Hey engineers, y'all need to make new hot feature x by next month

Engineers: what?! There's not enough time

Management: oh, I believe in you guys, just push hard through crunch time! We will give you guys a 3000$ bonus (at the end of the year, if you still have jobs)

Engineers: uhh well, okay, if you say so. We will stay up late every night and get er done boss

Engineers, late at night: hmm. I should really implement this chair... But let's cut some corners. Oh, whoops, I made just a pile of random sicks and sawdust. Oh well, they kinda work as a chair, if I just glue them together ... Slap some paint on... Done! Phew, just in time

Management: wow! We were right to believe in you! You guys are THE BEST DEVS EVER. We gonna make so much money. Oh that bonus? Yeah, later...

Engineers next year: yeeeeaaaahhh, I got my bonus. I think I'll just find a new job instead of doing all this boring work fixing the chair. You can sit on it, it works, I'm outta here

Management: That went great! Better repeat this process 100 times

Board: why the fuck is everything going so slowly? Fire the entire management team and replace them with outside experts. That's sure to fix the problem

Yeah, that line seemed careless. Who said that? Why? Was it literally just some attendee that said it, without any knowledge?

That said, I think scaling problems won't be "over" when eth2 happens. We will have 1024x capacity, but basically by having 1024 distinct Ethereum chains that now must figure out how to best cooperate. And they have some solutions for that, including duplicating contracts across shards, yanking assets from one chain to another, and probabilistic promissory tokens that represent value that hasn't confirmed yet.

Eth 2.0 won't be as fast or cheap as sidechain systems, so they will continue to have a role too

I do struggle with this one. On the one hand, desire of sensual pleasure leads to suffering. Okay

On the other hand, if a pleasant experience comes your way, should you shy away from enjoying it? I think no

Imho, the key is to bring mindfulness into your experience and decision making, rather than simply trying to avoid pleasure (which could be another Buddhist "sin": ignorance)

Yeah, Roger, please go full retard on this.

Get a camera crew. Silly costumes. Makeup. Splash screen. Get a slot on prime time tv

"Wassup bitchez, this is RRRROOGGER VER VER ver ver very good, and I'm here on FLIP YO CASH"

"TODAY, we gonna visit this whack taco stand that only takes Yen. Pfft what a bunch of suckas. We gonna go down there and FLIP YO CASH."

Then you get a designer to renovate their storefront with a bunch of green BTC stickers, 20x20 feet

Just for the sake of fun, let's look at that limerick (though there are a lot that start with that phrase). I've added underscores where the stress is, and added a {b} where rests go

There _once was a m_an from Nant_ucket {b}

Who k_ept all his c_ash in a b_ucket {b}

  But his d_aughter, named N_an,

  Ran _away with a m_an

And _as for the b_ucket, Nant_ucket {b}

Notice: AABBA, 33223, with strong internal rhymes, and a wordplay twist at the end. This is one of the most classic examples of a solid limerick

Apollo bless his poor soul

I'm so so sorry

You should be sorry

Limericks: AABBA with 3, 3, 2, 2, 3 stressed syllables

Yours: AABBB with 4, 4, 2, 2, 3 stressed syllables, at best

I demand 10 prayers to Apollo, god of music and poetry

Heh EOS apps escaping back to ETH eh?

Wow! One of the very best analyses I've ever read. So many original charts and clear comparisons to other asset classes. Thank you so much

I use a directory based autocommand that makes a bunch of splits, opens terminals, and starts up my servers. So I just cd to my project for and type nvim

Fantastic work, and insightful analysis. Thanks for making some best in class development tools and services for BCH

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize that you wanted a 100% mathematical proof of the future price of a speculative asset

Here, let me check my pocket. Oh, what's this? Its a crystal ball? Holy shit what does it say? Fuck off

Pretty simple imo:

• we've already tested 1000+
• staking may result in half the eth of the world being locked as savings. This might be a 2x multiplier in price
• we only handle like 30 transactions per second currently. Very few people are using eth. If we suddenly handle 3000 tps, the coin would be much more valuable. This might be a 10x
• network effect is non-linear. As more apps are built, and more users enter, we are likely to see exponential growth. See metcalfe law. Might be another 10x
• BTC is currently 65% dominant. If eth secures the top spot, there might be a 3x there
• crypto networks are becoming connected, and eth is one of the major ways that it's possible. The future will be a "network of networks," which eth 2.0 is by design

So basically if eth actually achieves some of the above, a 100x-500x in price is plausible. Then there's also speculation to consider

This is the much longer term plan (post sharding). In the more immediate future (i.e. this year) you will only be able to convert eth1 to eth2 as a one way bridge. It's expected that the price of both will be the same

I'll happily take 0.7% forever over "some random rich guys who aren't even technically part of the government get to decide how much money is printed at any given time, and access to them is only given to the powerful"

Well, we better hurry up and patch those feature out of vim then. Because stock vim does provide: file browsing, debugger integration, running your program, and even "managing files; etc"

Also, I have no idea what you mean by "inherently designed." Vim's an extensible system that already does much more than just "editing text"

Imho:

• Faster transitions, more variety
• Drop the drum track sometimes, for emphasis
• Needs more sense of build ups, release, and movement

Yeah, I've been pretty deep into it lately. First season is good, but then it really gets cool. Unusual sci-fi setups, unexpected writing, main characters die, some GoT feel with the politics of the world and competing factions

Overall, one of the most enjoyable sci-fi dramas that I've seen

Explain to me the difference between a "text editor" and an "IDE" and then maybe we can have a basis for discussion

So far, I only see that used as an excuse, for when vim fails to do what the user wants

Romain Lettuce, The Patient Vimmer

... Unless it's neovimming. No time for that bullshit

Perhaps /r/vim is more about the concept of vim, rather than a specific implemention? Hmm

Yeah, that is progress. Though to play devil's advocate a bit: very lucky on the 3 minute block confirmation, and very lucky that you only needed 1 confirm

It's very possible that you have to wait 30-60 min for something like that, which imo is a big usability failing

Thank you for this, I really enjoyed it. Feels like the good ol days, where we were focussed on adoption instead of infighting

Definitely seems like "eCards" are pretty much prepaid visas though, so we are still some ways away from it really being possible to live on just BCH

But I sure hope one day it's possible for me to come to Japan without any cash, avoid having to do expensive conversions, and just pay BCH directly. That would be a cool future

Bahahaha... yep. This narrative is getting mighty confusing
