you know what just happened in Brazil, do you think either Trump's victories would been prevented if US elections had second rounds? (self.behindthebastards) [Politics]

Jason seems to think Trump actually winning in 2016 disproved his theory that he was originally running as a publicity stunt, but I don’t think it does at all disprove that. (self.behindthebastards) [General discussion ]

I'd have rather lived in the US only if I could be white.

I didn't say you did, I just think people might get that impression from what you did say.

there's a lot of authors who're good at world building but not actually telling compelling stories set within them.
Banks could do both

In theory anyone who knows about the Culture can travel and live there. They just don’t actively take measures to make that easier.
Doing that would probably do more harm than good in the long run because the Culture would have to take military action against authoritarian societies that don’t want to let their people leave. Even if the Culture could theoretically just overwhelm a society like the Azadians in a situation like that, seeing the Culture act like that would probably piss off other involved species the Culture is on a more equal footing on with.

Minds, culture citizens in general but Minds especially, are encouraged to have a sense of honour because it’s a way of promoting ethical behaviour in the absence of punishment.
Like culture Minds can effectively do whatever they want but a sense they will have shamed themselves if they act in an unethical way is what keeps the vast majority of them on the straight and narrow.

“And zero plan for what to do if they did” which is why his first term ended up being much more like a normal republican presidency than his second. The first time they didn’t have a plan to properly capitalize on the fascist momentum they’d built up

I mean the thing you'd probably do is just fine them enough so they can't profit from it

I feel like what makes Victor Salva unusually egregious is the fact that since he was actually convicted his past was entirely known to everyone and he got work in spite of that. Like no one who’s hired him or worked with him in the last 38 years has plausible deniability about knowing he’s a pedophile

....God can't have hated him that much if he's a free man
large numbers of council homes being sold off actually started in the 70s under Edward Heath.
people like to imagine Neolibralism came in all in one go with Thatcher and Reagan, but in both the US and UK there were elements of it in preceding governments
