Pacific Rim, The Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbean, Planet of the Apes. These movies use “excessive” CGi and are very well liked and highly regarded. It’s not about how much or how little is used and it’s not about practical or cgi, exclusivity. It’s the implementation and more to the point, making a good movie first. Take The Hobbit movies and change every last CGi character to practical makeup and every setting to miniatures and I guarantee it remains a dissatisfying disappointment to 99% of fans because of the film making and storytelling choices (forced through schedule and budget or otherwise).

It’s not the inherent use of green screen and CGI. It’s about implementation. Same choices could be made with practical effects and you could have the same or worse results. Using practical effects doesn’t inherently make a movie better.
