The problem is that comparing subjective experiences is difficult or impossible. It’s very hard to know if Alice imagines things more vividly than Bob, or if they just use different words to describe their experiences. No one has an objective baseline.

(Disclaimer: not a physician or a cognitive scientist, so I might not know what I’m talking about.)

I think we can use geometry to devise objective tests for complete aphantasia though. Imagine a tic-tac-toe grid. (This game has a million names. It’s a 3x3 grid where you draw an X or an O until someone has three in a row.) In how many different locations can you draw the three-in-a-row line? If you don’t have the answer memorized, then you must visualize it.

What does it mean to question the nature of a good question?

He was there the day the strength of Men failed.

I’m going to make a D&D magical item out of this.

I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic. The Bible is chock full of situational irony. The meek shall inherit the Earth, and all that.

Headcanon: further nebulae are not included because all nebulae in the game were created relatively recently, perhaps when the Eve Gate collapsed. You can only see them when you’re close to them because their light hasn’t reached more distant areas yet.

Ah, I forgot there were multiple orders. I have read Magician’s Nephew and LWW.

So often I might want to buy something but I don’t know if it costs $1k or $10k. I just want an order of magnitude before I write up an email that wastes my time and theirs!

I remember thoroughly enjoying the first two, then DNFed Horse and never picked the series up again. Perhaps I should give it another shot.

Depends on your definition of “well-intentioned”. Even people I vehemently disagree with have the right to put signs up on their property (and to some extent, on public property).

halligan8

Thanks. That’s pretty sad news.

halligan8

Sure I will. Gotta plan my runs too, though.

halligan8

Right, but the linked article only talks about the closure of the golf course.

halligan8

Anybody know if the road will be closed to runners and cyclists?

Necropost: Just read Lena and Driver. I’ll be thinking about these for a long time. My first thought is that ele is short for eléison (έλέησον), which is a plea: “have mercy!” It often comes up in Christian liturgies: “Kyrie eléison, Christe eléison”/“Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy”.

If ele is an alternative to qntm’s emulated hell, then Mercy is an apt name for it.

Unfortunately, term limits would require a constitutional amendment, which would require broad bipartisan support. This change will always disadvantage whichever side the court is sympathetic to, so term limits will never get the support needed to pass.

I was just disappointed they didn’t commit to the premise, which was really interesting and different from the Trek that had come before. Fixing a broken Federation should have taken several seasons. It should have been a long story about overcoming adversity through technical and political problem solving. We never even needed a reason why the burn happened! But it only took ten episodes to undo everything and put the Federation back on top of the galaxy.

halligan8

Or rejecting it was always the plan. What did this news cycle distract us all from?

halligan8

Sorry, those are the rules. Zombie Teddy Roosevelt for President ‘28.

halligan8

Where’s Eva Stratt when you need her?

halligan8

This is neat! Do the positions in these kinds of constructed problems have to be reachable from the starting position by a series of legal moves?

halligan8

I want to be like Shatner when I’m 95. Thought-provoking poem. Though, given the title, I thought it was going to be about how Masaka is waking.

halligan8

A good destination for that writeup is probably arXiv.

halligan8

Makes sense.

What if the Genii had discovered Atlantis? Let’s assume someone like Colm Meaney takes Weir’s place in the time travel shenanigans that allow the city to survive in the first place. They don’t have spacefaring backup from Earth, but they do know Pegasus and the Wraith better. They might be better at hiding until they’re strong enough to strike decisively.

You’re right on the Replicators. The Reese plan backfired and made them more powerful in human form. But the other weapon the Tau’ri gave the Asgard was the Ancient-derived antireplicator gun, and that tech did end up winning the war.

Would Anubis have been able to rise without the power vacuum the Tau’ri created?

I also wonder: if Earth hadn’t been there to shake up cosmic power dynamics, would someone else have done it eventually? Candidates include Genii, Kelowna, Sodan, and Hebridan/Serrakin.
