This is what I think is the case. Before MC reveals that what he’s shocked about from the diary is that Neil assaulted Lynette’s dad, his reaction was for something way worse.
I think Neil has been keeping from MC that his mom ran away after giving birth, hence “trying to protect [MC]” and not having the heart to tell MC himself, and opting to let the diary do it.
I think MC takes it especially hard, spirals into a depression and gets to the scene with Quinn and the drugs. Funny enough I think Quinn is just trying to help him in the only way she really knows how, rather than simply trying to score another customer.
