Thanks! Crazy that words that are almost identical have meaning that are homophones in English.

hellalearner

Hmm. I'm usually only working from digital sources, and the ඳ vs ද are often problematic. I think both because of typos as well as OCR problems.

I just checked the Buddhadasa Hewage Sinhala English dictionary, and it has

අදිනවා (ළිඳෙන් වතුර) draw

So does that mean "draw water from a well"? In which case that's a completely different meaning of the English word "draw".

It also has අඳිනවා draw, portray අඳිනවා put on, wear

https://arutha.lk/search/අදිනවා

https://arutha.lk/search/අඳිනවා

The government site seems to conflait the two: www.languagesdept.gov.lk/web/index.php?option=com_glossary&view=results&Itemid=180&category_id=0&letter=a&limitstart=2250&lang=en (you have to search, url doesn't keep the term.)

What do you think?

Thanks!

You can't just leave us hanging…

hellalearner

Neat!

like whines or groans

Is this connected with any specific thing or animal?

I've seen that බල්ලන් is the sahitya plural. Does that sound right?

hellalearner

Is බල්ලෝ an insult? I guess it is in English, too, but it's kind of a humorous one.

hellalearner

කෙදිරි ගානවා, ඥාව් ගානවා

What are those!

hellalearner

Oh, one question… Do people ever say මදුරෙක් instead of මදුරුවෙක්?

hellalearner

thanks!

hellalearner

Interesting! so I guess කීං is just an onomatopoeia?

And is that ගානවා the same as in තෙල් ගානවා? Like, spreading a kīn sound?

hellalearner

AI told me these sayings… could someone confirm if they are accurate?

  • මදුරුවාට පොල්ලෙන් ගහනවා වගේ
  • මදුරුවන්ට ලේ දන් දෙනවා
  • මදුරුවාට කාලතුවක්කුවෙන් තියනවා වගේ

And share any others please

hellalearner

What is the best way to talk about the buzzing sound a mosquito makes?

hellalearner

u/NotAPerfectUsername, does all that look correct?

hellalearner

Sorry, was there a typo?
