What was the problem with a secret link? The apps have the same UI except they also have drive mount, calendar, task and contact sync, and folder sync.

ianopolous

Yep we have had a terrible UI for many years. Though we have done a lot of work on it recently. You can see the latest on https://peergos-demo.net/

Or without creating any accounts with a read-only secret link:

Happy to answer any questions you have here.

We've done this now so this will be in the next release. Hopefully later this week.

the only hash we calculate now is the custom one i mentioned, so not useful for verifying. But once we upgrade to blake3 we can show that.

ianopolous

Yep this is high on our list right now.

ianopolous

sha1 shouldn't be used by anyone. We do have a hash we could show, but it is a custom tree hash (like blake3) but based on sha256, so probably not useful for anyone. Eventually we want to make that blake3 and then we could show that. The problem with a non treehash (like sha1 and sha256) is they take forever to compute on large files.

Thank you for the follow up. You'll be pleased to hear that writes are getting much faster in the next release. We've added a new bulk commit API that reduces the round trips for any write (including delete) from 4 to 1, and reduces the number of signatures by 1000x (signed client side, verified server side). In general, we are more latency sensitive than most encrypted storage, but that is because we protect more metadata than others.

I've also now made it not fall back to the browser on windows if the webview is absent, and instead show a window asking to install webview2 with a link to it. Thanks for catching this.

ianopolous

Thank for the confirmation. Let me know if you have any issues.

ianopolous

Interestingly, I've just set up a Windows 10 22H2 machine. Then downloaded the latest peergos release and installed it. The UI worked natively without the browser. It has a tray icon. Dragging a native folder onto it uploaded fine, and fast, including after closing it to the tray. I setup a sync too and that also worked. So I can't reproduce any issue on this version of Windows 10. Is there anything unusual about your machine? Could you email us the peergos logs in $HOME\.peergos/*.log?

ianopolous

Thank you. What's the best way to contact you?

ianopolous

Yep. It seems like it's more than 30%. We rely on the built-in windows webview, which is the modern way to do things cross platform, but is not in windows 10. I'll see what we can do with the limited resources we have.

ianopolous

We do have a proper desktop app. But it only works on windows 11. On windows 10 we fallback to opening in the browser, as you saw. I would recommend updating if you can as Windows 10 is not getting security updates anymore. I do think you hit an issue in sync though (triggered by windows 10 too), which I've pushed a fix for now which will be in the next release.

ianopolous

Thank you. That's probably it. We've tested on Windows 11, not 10. I'll see if we can get a copy of windows 10.

ianopolous

If you reach out and tell me your username I can process you a full refund too.

ianopolous

And I misread it. I replied in thread.

ianopolous

Thank you for reminding me of this issue and sorry it slipped through. You were using the wrong URL (peergos.demo.net rather than peergos-demo.net)

ianopolous

Hi there, it would be much nicer if you contact us and we try and figure what is going on. My best guess is you are on an old OS - what OS version are you on? The desktop apps all use a native webview so something must be wrong on your system.

Here is the upload time estimate:

Feel free to reach out to us: peergos AT peergos.org and we can try and diagnose what is wrong on your machine.

Thanks for the mention (Peergos creator here)! Happy to answer any questions here.
