1000% yes!!!! For example, if I could run our company's PAD automations on Linux, I'd never look back!

Yes, I know you can do more with python and all, but when the head partner says I like PAD, you kinda have no choice. For servers, etc., I already use Linux. :)

Looking stuff up is normal. I've been a software engineer for 28 years now and with the plethora of languages I have to code in, it'd be impossible to do things with any kind of effeciency without references.

A little word of advice... You've probably heard the term DRY, or don't repeat yourself, but I have one that is just as important: Don't reinvent the wheel. Reference often, use examples, frameworks, reference boilerplate, etc.

In short, don't worry about having to look things up - even if you're only using one language.

Another thing is practice. Your first language is always the hardest because you are learning key programming concepts, environment nuances, hardware, etc. There's more to programming than just knowing how to write a method or a class. You need to know the problem you are trying to solve intimately and be able to ascertain and trap as many possible invalid user interactions as possible. Although functional programming helps solve some of this, it is a skill that takes a lot of time to master, and you'll never account for every user action possible. It's a great time to start learning tests along with your programming in order to really be proficient.

I also suggest making sure that you be really familiar with versioning solutions such as git, documentation / journaling, virtualization and/or docker, software packaging/deployment, etc.

In short there is so much to learn and the learning never stops!

Wish you the best success!

Yearp! Totally get the same. Been married 12 years, still happens! I'm still the luckiest man alive!

Gonna be honest with ya. If you're an MSP, Jira or any other helpdesk system would be a better platform. Odoo has some serious issues with email and MTX. They started to address this in 17, but for us odoo has been a jack of most trades and master of none.

Don't even try to do anything that requires SEO and E-commerce just plain sucks.

It's also ungodly slow for working with anything with a larger database. To even get a halfway decent speed, you're going to need to self host (on premise) which requires a hafty 1 year upfront fee of all licensing, or try another 3rd party service.

I'm really interested in your view and research here as we have half a million appliance parts, and since last June have watched google DESTROY our ads account. We've been listening to our stupid google account rep - which I am learning is the WRONG thing to do.In our case, we simply need to show up in search and google shipping - we don't need to be on youtube, blogs, or whereveer else that Google wants to throw our ads with very little ROI.We're looking at setting up a PPC CPC campaign that would be beneficial, but have no clue where to start on this. I'm wondering if anyone who sees this post has any suggestions on where to start? Thanks for your post, and thanks to anyone who replies to this.
BTW: for those curious, we've been using PMax, and it's AWFUL for our niche.

Yessssssss! Finally! Can't wait to see more!

Antisematic ass.

We need Super Bean!

ihazcodez

Agreed. Good souce code should be something that others can look at and understand without repeating yourself. Well commented as well.

I'm not sure I'd this is different still in version 17, but the windows does not support multiprocessing as well as the linuzlx. This is due to a restriction in how workzueg is used.

There are also loads of external requirements such as a full blown mta if running more than one domain and truly supporting email features for them.

ihazcodez

Thank you kind person!

ihazcodez

I've experienced the same!

A prime example of when looks and popularity get you through school...

This is an issue I had run into and has to do with the way that odoo takes over the domain name's redirect. I had to setup my nginx config in a bit of a wonky way.

United States / Philippines - Recently Debian, before Ubuntu.

If I wanted any lip from you, I'd scrape it off my zipper. You couldn't pour piss out of a boot if the instructions were written on the bottom. I wouldn't waste my piss on you if you were on fire. You're dumber than a box of rocks.

My step father was a real douche to me.

ihazcodez

Genuinely curious, what's your issue with this?

ihazcodez

This will sound similar to everyone else, but using wsl2 is a good option. I've gone as far as setting up a dev server of sorts with home network/zerotrust so I can easily access my dev 'server'. Its not perfect but it works and has some benefits such as being able to use Adobe stuff, and microshaft teams which the company I work for needs me to use.

Also, with this setup I get some nice cross platform stuff with powerbi / and power automate desktop.

ihazcodez

This just encourages me to open an agency that offers a decent wage for Filipino developers. I'm thinking about it, but I'd need enough to cover costs, management, etc. I'd basically take the least amount of the earnings as possible. I'd also open it up for work from home opportunities. No need to have an office these days.

ihazcodez

This is most likely the real issue. At 50k a month, you're SEVERELY under paid for a US company. That's just a little more than half of the United States minimum wage.
Be careful as your contract with the agency may prohibit you from directly working from the client. Check it carefully and avoid a nasty legal issue.

ihazcodez

Realistically, with some find and replace, and some small modification, it's easy to steal code. 30 years programming, and the reality that SOME people are honest in the coding world is obviously negative.

My advice always... If you're worried about your code being pirated - keep it secret, keep it safe.

Also, there are very good kudos to having open source, including use in your portfolio.
