This is literally untrue. A random ass reddit user started a grassroots campaign that is continuing to grow, see /r/50501. We saw protests in all 50 states on February 5. Then we did it again on President's Day 2/17. Then again two days ago, 3/4. We also had an economic blackout on 2/28. And a larger boycott of Amazon is planned for at least 3/7-3/14. There's a 40 day boycott of Target being organized by a black megachurch. There's another nationwide protest being organized for April 5th. There is a march on DC being planned for Independence Day (July 4).

This is a way more technical answer than you want but..

Tabby is influenced by the agouti gene which restricts the production of eumelanin on the "background" (non-striped areas) and causes each individual hair to alternate between bands of eumelanin (black/brown/gray) and phaeomelanin (red/orange/cream/yellow). When a cat is non-orange, it must also have agouti for the underlying tabby pattern to become visible. Orange cats always show the tabby pattern, regardless of agouti gene.

A non-orange cat with black eumelanin and agouti will express as a "black/brown tabby." The background will appear an ambiguous gray-brown color because the hairs are alternating between black and yellow. This is your cat.

A non-orange cat with black eumelanin and the dilution gene will be a more definitive gray ("blue tabby").

There is also a gene that turns eumelanin to a more definitive brown which would make a "chocolate tabby."

And last, but certainly not least, there's also torbies/calibies, which are tabbies with the tortoiseshell/calico pattern that alternates between splotches of black and orange. And similarly, diluted torbies/calibies, which will alternate between splotches of gray and cream. These cats are almost always female due to reasons I won't go into because this post is long enough as is lol.
