The sarcasm was for the shocking. It's not at all shocking and exactly what we would expect a bronze age warlord to think :). I did leave it out at first :)

I think you missed my entire point. When was the last time someone under 30 talked about dances with wolves as if it has any relevance?

Many movies and literature feature a person from one culture going into another culture learning and assimilating.

The point of avatar is about how ecologies are interconnected systems and corporate expansion has impacts. I would say something like fern fully is probably closer. But again these stories need to be reinvented for each generation to teach the same stories.

The white guy going native and the technology (which is interesting) is just one part of the story Cameron wants to tell.

And star wars is identical to old western tropes that mostly predate genx, reimagined to speak to later generations.

I'm not arguing avatar is good movie or anyone should like it, but they are successful and I think they reach people that aren't in reddit don't care or think about dances with wolves or any really old movies but will see a new big blockbuster.

I give this movie the highest possible compliment for such an endeavor . I did not hate it :).

I tend to agree though it drew strong parallels to mountains of madness in expanding the palette of the mystery. The engineers being human like were annoying.

But in the 70s something like the face hugger and xenomoroh was very alien seeming, but it still followed the trope of alien life somehow being compatible with earth life. And in the 70s that was ok, now I want the errors corrected why any Allen organism would be compatible with the biology of another alien species and all the micro biomes involved.

Alien had that mystery, but like we no longer find aliens wanting to reproduce with earth women plausible, alien today would need to do better. I like Calvin from Life :)

As a god of apes , his obsession with male - ape pattern reproductive strategy (anti gay, woman virginity as main value, children as property) is shockingly similar to what warlords of the era would think and feel. ;)

I can see why the extended ending was cut. It's tone is vastly different than the rest of the film and even knowing what was trying to be portrayed I have a hard time thinking this was a great way to visualize it so abstractly? The idea of human and ant evolution and integration is a fascinating idea but I just don't think that ending really did a good job of treating that concept in a satisfying way, though at the time and budget, it was probably very challenging.

Otherwise a fantastic movie

FYI spiritual successor is Sleep Awake have not played it yet. Loved here they lie.

A good director can inspire good writers. Ridley did work with the writers of Prometheus but imo they were not the best choices for writers. I like Prometheus, though I don't like what they did with the engineers, they did solve the problem of the xenomorohs being so adapted to earth like mammals :)

Scott is a great executor but yes directors get all the credit and blame when it's armies of people working on all aspects of the film and ultimately the director (or studio producers) get to make the decisions.

It is sickening.

Fuck US for helping turn Iran into a theocracy as it furthered their interests.

Iran in the 70s was very progressive :(. For those that think it can't happen in the US look at pictures of Iran in the 70s.

All the zombies. The parasites were ok. Mutants are mostly silly but fun. I can't express enough how boring zombies as enemies are to me. That's not to say that great games/movies cant have zombies but zombies as enemies in games and movies are just not interesting to me and I can't recall when they ever were (though symbolism and historical importance in cinema and games is absolutely valid).

Edit: I get why people don't like molded but they were one of the only re enemies I found scary. They weren't super inventive visually. I played re7 in vr and seeing one of those things loom up in front of me was very scary at the time.

ittleoff

The reason is they are easily comparable successful blockbuster movie. And for me it's easy comparison as a movie franchise that could not exist and I'd not blink an eye, but I can see why and how others love these films. The contrast is obvious and simple. Hope that helps.

ittleoff

I never thought I'd ever like these movies and I think I saw like 7 out of nothing else to see, and I was shocked how genius they were at knowing exactly what they were and delivering it with laser precision. I will defend them now.

The laptop is roughly comparable to a desktop 4070ti. I have a similar laptop and it trades blows vr wise with my 4070ti desktop.

At the time I recall liking it more than re4. Possibly due to coop. The setting and atmosphere had the potential of real horror but per typical RE it dipped it all in b movie cheese. I'm still very fond of it, and would love a remake or remaster, but I can see where it might have the optics of controversy.

I think Denis succeeded with the dune movies because he doesn't try to explain too much. Lynch honestly tried to really explain a lot of the politics and most people. Denis sort of shows things and iykyk, but audiences don't have to have the exposotik to understand all the houses and the dynamics. Just the core.

ittleoff

Wow I played this ages ago. Very fun at the time. I'll add it to the heap to have another look.

ittleoff

Imo dune is a book series that in lot of ways is deeper and more interesting than Star wars or lotr.

I'm not going to argue it's prose is better than lotr, but Herbert's understanding of large patterns in history and especially the dangers of religion and Messiah figures and how they fit into politics and power was very interesting. To me I do care about the story and not the spetacle so much.

I don't think OP or anyone needs to like these movies. I don't like marvel films but I can't tell anyone they should not like them :)

ittleoff

This.

I sort of think ps4 era was a good era and better than ps3 which had a lot of stumbling (and I loved motion controls on ps3 even played and enjoyed Lair.). The Wii was a game changer. X360 was successful but was imo an awful anti consumer ecosystem and outside the valiant attempt at jrpgs, which i don't play, and condemned and gears of war, I only owned one for about a month before selling it. For many it was their console growing up though. I get that. The OG Xbox is the only Xbox I have really loved.

I do think there is a case to be made for ps2 Xbox and gc(though I don't think gc was strong for Nintendo)

The puppeteering and lip syncing they did even at half speed is still mind blowing to me.

Man in the high castle. I really didn't put together how broad and deep a career he has had. Bravo, sir!

Humor is subjective.

I got all the references of robot chicken, I admire the animation work, but 90 percent of it was really bland obvious and boring 'humor' for me. 10-15 percent was funny to me

But then I always thought the evil monkey in the closet was an unfunny 'joke' on family guy and I always suspected Seth green was behind it.

If an evil monkey in a closet or a robot chicken are funny concepts to you than you probably will like this show.

ittleoff

Wow that's a slow roll out it's been like that I think for months for me and thought I was just adding something as no one was complaining. I have an old quest 1 I use as it's wireless OLED for horror games, and it's stuck on a UI that is just lovely intuitive and functional. The contrast was shocking I forgot that it was so nice once.

ittleoff

I have an old quest 1 for OLED wireless, and damn the UI is so much better and the home environments are so lovely.

Issues my quest 3 has:

No longer sorts by last played (hasn't for months) this is a huge issue, is no one else experiencing this?

The way to pause and resume a game is nuts especially if you are wanting to join or create a party chat. Had to pause game go to chat, kill the window, then go find the app(which is not sorted by last played) to just resume the game/app.

ittleoff

Also color contrast and composition is more interesting to me. Though these days most games that have a spoopy face in the thumbnail or capsule I ignore, unless the art style is original and actually looks more interesting than genetic creepy face in unreal engine
