Every take I agree with is god-tier. Every take I disagree with is horseshit. I am very smart.

I’m not talking about legality. I’m talking about morality. What they didn’t isn’t illegal due to a technicality because US laws were not prepared for data scraping of this magnitude, but they still stole and profited from data they don’t own.

jgaskins

Your first point is incorrect, at least in the US. SCOTUS declined to hear a case about whether AI-generated content can be protected by copyright. This means they defer to the lower court’s decision, which is that AI-generated outputs are not eligible for copyright protection because copyright only governs works created by humans. In other words, everything generated by AI is effectively in the public domain.

So, while distillation may be against OpenAI’s TOS, it’s not against the law.

They did pay for a subset of the infrastructure to scrape the internet and train their models, but they didn’t license the data.

Imagine you run a business and you pay your executives, your lawyers, and you pay the marketing platforms because they won’t work for you if you don’t, but you somehow manage to avoid paying the people who provide the thing your business depends on to get off the ground (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc doesn’t exist without stolen data), then you’ve skipped out on a bill. Just because you paid some people doesn’t mean you’re settled up. And saying that they’ve paid a lot of money is jumping to the defense of rich people who do not need or deserve your defense. Someone using imprecise words doesn’t mean OpenAI’s business practices are in any way defensible.

To be clear, even most local LLMs have this same problem. I use AI despite knowing how problematic it is. My career depends on it and I have a mortgage to pay. So I’m not railing against any AI lab or LLMs in general. I just think that if we’re going to argue about it we need to have more facts.

I’m not sure why you’re getting downvoted. Maybe the bar is lower for them than it is for a true connoisseur.

Since when has that stopped him?

Every time I hear it, I can’t not think of this movie. Same with Voodoo People.

You’re thinking of Charlize Theron. ScarJo is from NY.

I fucking hate this thread. Excellent work, y’all.

The thing about aggregations such as percentiles is that you may not be where you think you are in the dataset.

They’re doing in vitro fertilization on Postgres now? Incredible.

I read it as “Hank Green”, but my mind processed it as “Hank Hill”. Time to invest in propane and propane accessories.

This new Twister game sounds weird, but let’s see what happens. flicks the spinner Right foot, mirror!

This graph is misleading. The problem is not just the total aggregate volume of water that it uses. It's how much water it uses in a single given area served by a single municipal water source. Adding a single data center changes the energy and water demand in that area drastically almost overnight and the existing infrastructure may not be able to handle the demand of both that new data center and the existing residential customers.

And you can't just bolt on more water supply. You need to expand the capacity of processing, storage, movement, filtration, and all kinds of other subsystems. These sorts of things are typically expanded gradually as a community grows, but the data center demands that water immediately. You effectively need to build a whole new municipal water supply just for the data center.

I feel like maybe I should farm some karma by posting one of these. There seems to be one of these posts every day or two with hundreds of upvotes.

You're the one making the claim. Don't chicken out. Back it up with some evidence.

We have parted ways with our Executive Director, our PR agency …

This is amazing. If RC can get rid of rank-and-file contributors, they can get rid of leaders for bungling comms for months on end and causing repeated controversy.

We are grateful to … David Heinemeier Hansson

But why would they do this? Ruby Central going out of their way to "be grateful to" DHH is a significant part of how all this mess began.

There was no reason to mention him at all, just like so many other "members of the community who shared their perspectives and guidance" were also not mentioned. His name could've been left out of the post just like the rest of ours were. When you consider just how polarizing a person he is in general, I just can't imagine his name is worth mentioning in these posts.
