At this point I've come to see actions like this as a form of pathology with similarities to obsessive compulsive behavior. It is like in the story of that woman who first found less and less time for her family and her ageing mother, instead caring a lot for her snakes. In the end, the woman didn't attend her mother's funeral because she felt unable to not care for her snakes for a day or two. It's when some part of your life takes over and suddenly everything else has been relegated to being a second or third class concern. Your life now has a dictator and it's not you although you might think you're still in charge.
This guy has ≈3e11$, 5% of that one-time payment is 15e9$. Yes it sounds like a lot until you realize that ordinary people regularly pay like anywhere between 10% and 50% of their income in taxes in most parts of the world, and seeing how rich Mr Page is I doubt he paid anything like that rate in recent decades.
Put it another way say you earn 10,000$ a month (which is comfortable and unimaginably much for like 95% of all people on Earth) and your tax is 5%—that's 500$. In reality you should be much closer to 50% in taxes but let's say it's 5%. You still get to keep 95% (all of 9,500$) for yourself. But now, instead of just paying, there's no-one stopping you from buying front-page ads (for rather more than 500$) and pester all the politicians and show up on TV shows and talk radio to tell everybody and their dog how you threaten to leave your home country / state / area of residence because you can't take it anymore. It's ridiculous and people around you will notice that your behavior has become pathological.

"oh dear isn't this a bit backwards, dear?"–"oh yes it certainly is, my dear, isn't it."—may make a Monty Python sketch from that. But you're right.

Da ist kein "trickle-down", kein "the rising tide Lifts all the boats".

Your view has been a bit near-field-distorted I'm afraid. Yes, this time it's specifically about Africa, presumably because African countries for whatever reason now started this initiative. But when you search for it you'll find that apart from the "Africa in fact much bigger than Greenland" tidbit being thrown around presently, there's also comparisons of N.- and S.-America, China, and so on that have been floated around for many many years.
Africa is not "the only continent" with this going on, personally I have seen discussions about the merits and demerits of the Mercator projection since the 1970s which is about as far as I can remember anything, and I'm 100% certain the discussion is much older still. I'm sure Mercator himself must have been aware of the distortion and would not have advertised his map as a "good for comparing sizes across differing latitudes" solution. It was only ever meant to be a "good for keeping constant angles against meridians when plotting sailing courses" solution.

johnfrazer783
Alter das ist so krank.
"Oh, kuck ma, hier stehen gar keine [hässlichen gesichtslosen kastenförmigen] Gebäude [mit leerstehenden Büros und höllisch überteuerten Apartments] rum. Was für eine Platzverschwendung!" (fixed that 4u).
johnfrazer783
Guess I'm late to the party? Interested!
johnfrazer783
I'd be very interested in learning how you extracted the line data from OpenStreetMap, like what method or software you used for that. I want to do some cartographic stuff with subway and S-Bahn data, that should be similar. Still in the planning stage though and maybe I'll just draw the lines by hand...

I feel the compulsion to add that in a, well, not ideal but slightly better world it would be the case that every refusal to execute should be accompanied with a detailed reasoning, like a frame around a face because it looks like a minor or a V.I.P. (sidenote: censorship is deeply broken; people like Taylor Swift who chose to live out their lives in the limelight are protected, but the common man and woman on the street are not?). It has happened to me that I got a complaint because there (1) was a kid visible (in the distance, in a crowd, in an AI-generated image, with a SFW topic), (2) there was something in the image that made the AI falsely assume it was a depiction of a minor, (3) or that processing the image of a crowd of people got rejected apparently because one or two of the faces triggered V.I.P. recognition. If the latter happens to you, good luck finding the particular face.
Also one could imagine the AI replying: "I cannot do that because reasons, but I can try my best removing anything offending", so maybe an image of a V.I.P. gets turned into a random likeness, and kids are turned into adults or just left out.
I guess what I want to say is that the way it is being handled right now is somewhat hamfisted and lets customers hodling the bag. Like with so many other cases like supermarket checkout where they have their paying customers do the work for them.
johnfrazer783
OK can't fight an axiom I guess.
johnfrazer783
Dude I get it you have one unit of a family history, some of it tragic and all, but what does any of your above comment have to do with Ibn Wahshiyya's writings or the reception thereof?
johnfrazer783
In order to claim that the author—whoever the real author of this work is—has "discovered" something, there should at least be some truth to their claims, and some lasting substance. However, the work is one of pure imagination, based on nothing. Yes, he did identify some hieroglyphs with Arabic letters. All of his associations are wrong though. Because they were just as inventively and spontaneously jotted down like the rest of the "magical alphabets" in his book. Seriously the author did more for the advancement of conlangs than for the decipherment of Egyptian.
As for your point that credits him with saying that "hieroglyphs are [...] not occult symbols", well, they are presented in the context of 92 other writing systems, all of which are, as far as one can tell, freely invented. For the purposes of magic, a.k.a. occult practices, for crying out loud.
In each and every respect, (Pseudo) Ibn Washiyya's work is the exact opposite of what you claim: No discovery is made, the decipherments are imaginary, and, to add insult to injury, the clearly stated claim of his work (as per the title) is to imbue Egyptian writing with occult meaning. There's no fucking science done here. None.
johnfrazer783
Well, yes, as decorative pillars or columns. Because of their shape. Decorations to stand out of a structure, on their own.

The entire concept of "conspiracy" is just a plot by the Reptilians to keep the sheeple stupid.
To be fair in 1880 they didn't have straight lines, those only got invented in 1892 by one G. O. Meater in the Hamlet of Brandon, Wisconsin. Most borders are older than that which is why they are typically so wiggly.
