This is the correct answer.

I received 2 of these in the past 2 days.
Unfortunately for them, I know how e-mail works.
You can send as any e-mail address, without being in their account. It's how most spam works, actually. Here's a PHP example:
<?php
$to = '[email protected]';
$subject = 'the subject';
$message = 'hello';
$headers = 'From: [email protected]' . "\r\n" .
'Reply-To: [email protected]' . "\r\n"
mail($to, $subject, $message, $headers);
?>
Now, most mail servers should stop this from working, but also most mail servers are bad at security (looking at you, Google).
If you view the source of the e-mail, you'll see that it didn't come from your friends mail server, but instead some other mail server.
This "trick" is as old as e-mail. It's a scam.

Because you live in the UK (or did... not sure which), I'm going to assume the company is a UK company.
Here's what the ICO says:
notify the ICO;
consider whether to notify your customers; and
record details in your own breach log.
IANAL, but hope this helps anyway.
EDIT to add:
If the breach is likely to adversely affect the personal data or privacy of your subscribers or users, you need to notify them of the breach without unnecessary delay. You need to tell them:
your name and contact details; the estimated date of the breach; a summary of the incident; the nature and content of the personal data; the likely effect on the individual; any measures you have taken to address the breach; and how they can mitigate any possible adverse impact.You do not need to tell your subscribers about a breach if you can demonstrate that the data was encrypted (or made unintelligible by a similar security measure).
If you do not tell your customers, the ICO can require you to do so if we consider the breach is likely to adversely affect them.

Dude. You reminded me of things that I did.
I was in the Navy before 9/11 happened. Stationed in San Diego (not important, but I'm about details). In 2002, I was transferred to Washington state. Because I was the new guy, and they needed to provide bodies to ASF (Auxiliary Security Force), I was one of 2 they provided. I actually made rate while in ASF (IT2 from IT3), but that's immaterial to the point (again).
So, I was working the inspection station one day. We would have 1 MA (Master at Arms)/ASF, who had a sidearm, and 2 inspectors. The inspectors wore working blues, while the MA/ASF would be in camos. As the vehicles would come in to the "tunnel", I would give my spiel: "You have been randomly selected for a vehicle inspection. Please place your vehicle in park, open all internal/external compartments, lower the visors, open the hood and the trunk, and have your ID ready, then step out of the vehicle and sit at the seat provided."
Well, on this day, this kid (read: 18-19) comes in. He's in his dress whites). I give him the spiel, then the inspectors get working. Now, he's all in a hurry, and acting like we shouldn't be inconveniencing him. Nothing new, but I've got him outranked, so I ignore him.
Well, one of the inspectors calls to me "Petty officer Joker54, his trunk isn't open." I ask him to open the trunk. He says that the latch is broken. We try it, and sure enough, it doesn't work. We ask him to use the key. Still won't open.
Well, he's getting a bigger attitude at this point, so I figure, eh. Make him wait longer. So, we call in the drug dog.
While we're waiting, the inspector finds a switch by the drivers seat. Pop goes the trunk.
We go back to the back (I had another camo on-site at this point -- my QRT guy). Clothes and a bottle of Febreze. Nothing else. Well, it was at this time we would have let him go with a "have a great day", but now the K9 unit has arrived. Once called, we MUST wait for them to perform their inspection.
Dog signaled. On the Febreze. We open it, and get a strong whiff of a metallic smell. K9 human is a member of NCIS (they aren't as cool as on TV, by the way), so he calls in to have the kids ID ran. Comes back a womans name. Fake drivers license. We run his military ID -- his ship left port a month back. Missing Ships Movement (similar to AWOL, but you can't swim fast enough to get to your command).
So, to recap: if he would have opened the trunk, he wouldn't have gotten caught with drugs (never found out for sure, but I'm thinking meth?), using a fake ID, and he would have flown under the radar and been able to hang on base while being the Navy equivalent of AWOL.
I have other stories from my ASF days, but this is the one that took the cake on how fast you can screw your life up.
EDIT: changed 2012 to 2002. Man, I'm getting old.
