Yup, banning in this case (instead of deleting) is way too harsh and unhelpful.

Very, very few people read through every rule of a new sub before their first comment, so instead of being a way of weeding out people who refuse to 'get it', banning in this case strikes people almost at random.

It's poorly thought out, a waste of time for the mods and completely unfair to the people who end up banned, but that's reddit moderation for ya.
