In Laṅkāvatāra ch. 2, Mahāmati asks how tathāgatagarbha differs from the tīrthika ātman, and the answer is that it's taught as a designation for śūnyatā, bhūtakoṭi, nirvāṇa, anutpāda etc., to attract those attached to self-views. Do you read that as making tathāgatagarbha a provisional teaching for emptiness? If so, how does that square with the gold-in-ore picture of a dharmakāya actually present under the obscurations?
