You might not be but the point as stated of the jellyfin project is to seamlessly be supported on any number of clients. and my point is that that just isnt possible without transcoding for the reason i stated. which is why im responding to your statement "Honestly I don't get this obsession with transcoding" . transcoding is the very heart of jellyfin and its purpose, among other things.

you typically cannot send a codec to a device that doesnt have hardware support for it, that requires the CPU to decode it and typically these are underpowered embedded CPUs that cant handle that. Try sending a H265 stream to a Raspberry Pi 3 for example, it simply inst possible and can't be fixed by any software.

What are you talking about? Hardware is locked to the video codec built into it, if i have a smart tv in one room that can only do H264 and a newer 4K one in another room that is going to want a newer codec transcoding from the server will be required and not only the correct way to go about it but also what the entire Jellyfin project is built around. Then i have tablets, my PC, my phone and they will all want different reaolutions and aspect ratios and so will all require transcoding.
