I'm thinking we're over the whole "critical mass" thing now though. Reddit is good only because of subs with specific topics not because of the mass popularity.

The web conversation used to be forums that were dedicated to one thing. Reddit figured out how to scale this up and it was good for a time, but the need to generate revenue always wins.

We don't need to 'connect' with strangers. We don't need to be validated with posting. I just wanted a good place to get news from different sources. All that other shit is exploitative and alienating.

The issue with hosting shit these days is that anyone can post. This means that it's very easy for bad actors to shut it down. Reddit gets free mods, but they even hate this because the mods have power over their platform. 

Add in management of servers, authentication, surveying security audits. Have an open platform where anyone can log in, view stuff and share it is likely not possible.

I think it just needs to be private, with a circle of trust letting you in to view things. This shit can still leak and be hacked, but it prevents the random 4chan posters intentionally infecting you with links that would completely ruin your life.
